This is taken from a philosophical paper on ontology vs. reality, but I suspect this term is straight from Maths and my A'level maths was an awful long time ago....

Nehmen wir an, wir hätten eine Menge O mit n Objekten Ob. Dann können zwischen den n Objekten (n*(n-1))/2 binäre Relationen Rel gezogen werden, die Zahl der potentiellen binären Relationen N(Rel) verhält sich zur Zahl der Objekte N(Ob) somit quadratisch.

Does this just mean that the number of potential binary relations is the square of the number of objects?

Or have I misunderstood completely?

Explanation:
Just look at the formula n*(n-1))/2 = 0.5* (n**2 - n) so there is n squared (n**2) there and, as "n squared" increases much more than (n-1) as n increases, the quadratic relationship is almost complete
