English term or phrase: in the History Cycle
2008 is a great time to experience the Royal Shakespeare Company’s spectacular 1,030 seat Courtyard Theatre which continues to stage all of Shakespeare’s History plays. In February and March see all eight plays ***in the History Cycle ***– more than 24 hours of drama over four days. Familiar faces return to the RSC from April to November as Patrick Stewart and David Tennant return to Stratford in Gregory Doran’s new production of Hamlet. David will also play Berowne in the rarely performed Love’s Labour’s Lost. Also returning to the repertoire is Gregory Doran’s hugely popular production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream while a second acting ensemble will perform The Taming of the Shrew.

Shakespeare's History Cycles

Shakespeare wrote two four-play sequences dealing with the full story of the Wars of the Roses. The First History Cycle, written very early in Shakespeare's career, consists of the three parts of Henry VI and Richard III. The Second History Cycle, written a few years later, consists of Richard II, Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2, and Henry V. The term History Cycle may be somewhat misleading, since we have reason to think that the plays were not originally thought of as a linear sequence, even though we can treat them that way.
