Dutch term

toch of juist wel daarom

Dutch to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Identiteit nog niet helder:
X spreekt een ruime meerderheid van de gebruikers aan. Toch -of wellicht juist wel daarom- is de identiteit, en daarmee het verwachtingspatroon dat de gebruikers hebben van de site, niet altijd helder.

I'm not sure what "toch of wellicht juist wel daarom" means in the above bit of this general text about a website and a questionnaire to find out what people think of the website.

Identity not yet clear
The name X means something to the large majority of users. Nonetheless - or possibly rightly so - the identity, and also user expectations of the site, is not always clear.

I'm not sure whether the "nevertheless - or possibly rightly so - " bit is right.

Could anyone help please?

comment not for points

I agree with writeaway's suggestion (alghough 'nonetheless' might be a bit too formal for your context); the folling is intended to provide additional information.

Here 'toch' means 'despite this', and 'juist wel daroom' means 'for exactly this reason'. What the author is saying is that even though X appeals to most of the site users, it's indentity is not clearly defined (or not clearly perceived by the users), and this can be regarded as surprising given that so many people like the site, or perhaps as a logical consequence of the fact that the site appeals to so many users, which implies that it can't have a clearly defined identity.

typos: although, following, identity, and doubless others...
Peer comment(s):

agree jarry (X) : 'For exactly this reason' seems too definitive in view of the use of "wellicht" which introduces a measure of doubt. Hence my suggestion of 'possibly'. I think that writeaway 's use of 'perhaps' reflects this same degree of doubt.

Agreed; I only meant the meaning without 'wellicht'. Writeaway's suggestion, or the near equivalent 'perhaps for just this reason', is IMO a good translation of the entire phrase.
