Met deze prestatie zorgden de atletes voor een absoluut hoogtepunt in de Vlaamse atletiek.
Short article about the two Flemish women athletes who won three gold medals at the recent European Athletics Championships. Can’t quite find the right phrasing for this. At the moment I’ve got “Their performance marked a milestone in the history of Flemish athletics”, but it doesn’t quite convey the flavour of the original, especially when you bear in mind that before then Belgium had won only three gold medals in the 68-year history of the outdoor European Athletics Championships!

crowning achievement
E.g "marked / was the crowning achievement in the history of..."
Alternatively "high point" or "zenith" could cover "hoogtepunt", but perhaps don't cover the "absoluut" bit!
HTH!

marked/formed the summum of
In Dutch, the expression 'het summum van' is often used to the express the notion of the highest that is attainable. I was not aware of the fact that a similar expression is also used in English. Googling on 'the summon of' shows that it is. Perhaps even the Latin term 'summum bonus' would an option, by the way. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summum_bonum

reach the pinnacle in/of ...
since it is the 'absolute highpoint' that basically defines a 'pinnacle' - 'the highest point of development or achievement' according to Merriam-Webster
Example sentence:
... USC first reached the pinnacle of women's basketball in ...
The team's performance reached a pinnacle during the 2002 FIFA World Cup...
