Discussion

Christine Andersen Aug 27, 2009:
A 'kvajebajer' in Danish is a beer or round of drinks that is typically given to colleagues or partners after committing some gaffe.
It is an admission of having made a stupid mistake. There is normally no fraud or malice in the mistake - and the 'kvajebajer' or 'kvajkage', another variant, is an admission that none of us are perfect. It is given as a token peace-offering or apology for the inconvenience caused.

eat humble pie

eat humble pie and give a round of beer

I can't think of a precise translation for 'kvajebajer', but this is a suggestion.

Concise Oxford Dictionary:
humble
...

PHRASES
eat humble pie: make a humble apology and accept humiliation. [humble pie is from a pun based on umbles = 'offal', considered inferior food.]

In the USA the equivalent expression is to eat crow.

I have heard of 'idiot cake', which is frequently one that is easy to bake, so any idiot can do it, but may also be a cake offered at coffee time at work in the same way as a 'kvajebajer'.

That is not the same as beer, however.
