Catalan term

catedràtic de secundaria

Catalan to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy

We don't have professor at school/sixth form in the English-speaking world do we? Would this be the equivalent of a Deputy Head or Head of Department? Does anyone know what special functions/responsibilities a "catedràtic" has in a Spanish school?

...that temp would be out the door. Beign a "funcionario" has advantages and disadvantages... but mainly the former :-)
Berni Armstrong Feb 7, 2005:
Most full time, permanent teachers in state schools do have "oppos", however, it is possible to teach in some schools as a temp. Depending on circumstances. However, if a teacher came along and claimed a vacant posting currently filled by a temp, then...

For the moment I'm going with Bernie, but isn't Anna correct in saying that all teacher's have to do "oppos"?

Senior teacher

Your gut feeling was more on the money Tim. My wife, who is a secondary teacher, says to get this title you need to do "oppos", to have been a director at a school and to have published articles and have written a thesis.

Doesn't help you much though, since we have no equivalent post in the British or American systems. I would fudge it with "Senior Teacher" or some such.

Hope this is still of use to you.
Cheers,
Berni

En español y catalán, "catedrático" es nombre común para maestro, profesor, hasta donde sé.

Catalan term (edited): catedrtic de secundaria

secondary school teacher

Catedràtic is used for state schools in Spain, where teachers have to go through public examinations (oposiciones) in order to get a position in a secondary school. Once they "own", as it were, their "cátedra" they have it for life. They are civil servants employed by the government, not the individual schools. The system is very different in the UK, as schools advertise on the press and appoint whoever they want.
So a "catedràtic" is simply a teacher, and in the example you give a "secondary school teacher".
Hope this is helpful, Tim.
