Alexander Schleber (X)
: slahing and cutting are almost synonimous. Hacking vs. cutting weapon woud be OK. Hacking (with an axe for instance) takes still more effort than slashing or cutting.

Thanks, Alexander. But slashing conjures up more physical effort, no?

Comment: "Thanks! Yes, I get the sense it is a combination of the slashing of a Samurai sword and the hitting/hacking of a sharp axe."

blunt instrument
It seems to me that Hiebewaffe corresponds to the term "blunt instrument" which appears regularly in book and TV "whodunnits" and court reports.

Alexander Schleber (X)
: A blunt instrument cannot cut.

Cetacea
: A "blunt instrument" is "stumpfer Gegenstand" in German. Eine Hiebwaffe ist eine Klingenwaffe, die hauptsächlich dazu ausgelegt ist, mit einer Schneide die Kraft des Hiebes zu nutzen.
