”Sight words” is the term for words that readers should recognize instantly. Recognition is important because sight words are so frequently used—making up, by some estimates, 50 to 75 percent of all words that children are likely to encounter. It is also important because many of them do not sound as they are spelled, making them difficult to sound out using knowledge of phonics. Having the sight words within his or her repertoire gives the child a better chance to grapple with more difficult and infrequent words without losing the sense of what is being read. The sight words include commonly used words—words that are ubiquitous and important to understanding. Two lists that help educators and parents identify these words and give them the attention they deserve are the Dolch List of Basic Sight Words and Fry’s 300 Instant Sight Words. Both lists are available on the National Institute for Literacy website. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-sight-words.htm "Spelling" is deletreo -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2012-01-18 22:51:37 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Como habla de las reglas para mayúsculas, comas, etc. creo que lo que queda es deletreo". The word “orthography” comes from Greek roots meaning “correct writing.” Many people specifically identify orthography as the study of spelling, although this is a bit inaccurate. Orthographers do study spelling and are especially interested in the commonly accepted spellings used in a language's writing system, but they also study much more than spelling. Spelling is only one aspect of orthography, and it was not very standardized for much of history; even now, there are a number of variations on words which many people think are spelled in only one way. One aspect of orthography is punctuation, the examination of markings used on the page to add more depth to the text. Punctuation provides information about how a text should be read and interpreted, and can also provide critical insight into meaning. Orthographers are also interested in topics like capitalization and other norms of writing, including natural variations seen in various communities of language speakers. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-orthography.htm |
