French term

alimenter les brochures

French to English Tech/Engineering Printing & Publishing
Talking about printing a TV guide, a printer discusses the fact that they had a competitive advantage because they were able to "alimenter les brochures", thus allowing the guide to appear on news stands a day earlier.

Does this basically mean "putting advertisements/supplements inside the guide"?

Discussion

Emma Paulay Jun 1, 2010:
@Neil My hunch is that it should read "brocheur", but it is just a hunch. I worked in press distribution for 14 years - more on the newspapers than magazines side, so not directly concerned with binding - but I spent a fair amount of time at print plants and distribution centres. This is not to say I'm right, it's just to explain why I tend towards this interpretation :-) I also don't think that automatic intake of new copy is a particular selling point for a magazine printer. IMO it's a given, they can all do it.
Neil Coffey (asker) May 31, 2010:
@Emma Emma -- if by any chance you're still following this thread, I'd be interseted in your view on what @fourth is saying, that it could be talking about intake of copy after all?
Jack Dunwell May 31, 2010:
Having discussed this at length with my artist/designer/illustrator wife, we feel that this has to do with pre-press planning, automative intake of new copy, internally developed software that provides ready formats to speed up the process.
Tony M May 31, 2010:
And also: Some 'binders' also deal with, for example, the distribution side of things.
Emma Paulay May 31, 2010:
@Neil Not all - I think that might be a historical thing due to trade union regulations. However, I think in this case that is what this printer is suggesting - that he has an "integrated process", which speeds things up.
Neil Coffey (asker) May 31, 2010:
@Emma Emma -- I must admit I hadn't thought of this, although don't big printing companies do the binding in-house?
Neil Coffey (asker) May 31, 2010:
Yes, don't think "provide the content" fits Essa Emma says, because it is just printing that's being discussed, providing content doesn't fit unfortunately.
Julie Barber May 31, 2010:
obviously I don't think that anybody here thought that we were talking about the printer providing the content, that's obvious, although it had past me by that it was the printer not the publisher.
Emma Paulay May 31, 2010:
Printers don't provide content! Let's not forget that this is a competitive advantage of the printer.
Julie Barber May 31, 2010:
Morning all, I did look around and find an example of Emma's suggestion: http://www.aspimprimerie.qc.ca/ideesprevention/ficheideespre... yet I'm not sure that they would name it as a reason for being ready earlier - you'd have thought that something else would have come first - so I would sway towards Sangro's suggestion.
Emma Paulay May 31, 2010:
Brochures or Brocheurs? The "brocheur" is the company that does the binding (or stapling) of a magazine once it's been printed. In this context, it would seem logical that the mag were on sale earlier because they were able to send the copy to the brocheur (earlier). This printer probably has direct contact with a "brocheur". Could there be a misprint/misreading here?
Tony M May 31, 2010:
My guess... ...would be that this means 'feed the information directly in from a programme database'. 'alimenter' is a word that frequently crops up with databases, and clearly any automation of this part of the process could speed things up enormously.

Not provision of content, but the ability to feed in (late) content from the client, so that the print run is not held up by late additions.

early access to critical content

I am assuming that the printer has early access to TV listings which it then incorporates (so the company does not just do printing but typesetting too).

So I would change it around.
