I can't find a good translation for this, does anyone have any suggestions? It doesn't necessarily mean "majority shareholder" does it?

I agree with everything you say. What I am trying to say is that this is not a precise technical term like for example an "associate" under IAS which is a company in which another company holds a stake of between 20 and 50 percent. This is a very vague term which can very often be best translated with "majority shareholder", but only if the context fits. In your case, from what you say, "di riferimento" is just verbiage, a bit like "commercialista di fiducia" as if you would have two accounts one you trusted and one you didn't. If all the shareholders are "di riferimento" then they are all important, just like the trusted accountant. This has probably been copied and pasted from another document where they did not comprise all the shareholders.

Hi Jim! No - I understand your explanation, I just don't think the meaning you set out can be right in my case. To refer to a majority or most important or leader shareholder, there are other shareholders that you are NOT referring to. In my case, we are clearly referring to ALL of them, as their respective %'s add up to 100. In fact, for the same reason, it doesn't make sense either to call them the 'relevant' or 'applicable' shareholders: they are ALL of the shareholders, punto basta, so why they've called them the 'soci di riferimento' I just don't know.

Hi Joanna I think you are missing my explanation "No it doesn't necessarily mean majority shareholder, just an important one." I remember in an English lesson to a board member after the founding chairman CEO had died. And he said something like, "but you don't understand what I mean by 'di riferimento'". Then of course I learnt the meaning of the term. It is the leader, the one people go to and follow. In most cases it is where no shareholder has 51%, but there is one who "commands", who the others follow, probably with around 30%. Clearly that is not your case. You need to look carefully at the context and set up. Maybe "di riferimento" is just habit because they are all big wigs.

I've got a list of the names of the 'Soci di Riferimento' of an S.p.A., together with their % interests, but these add up to 100%. So in my case it can't mean majority (or major) can it, unless I'm missing something.......

No it doesn't necessarily mean majority shareholder, just an important one. It there is more than one "a major shareholder", if there is only one big shareholder then "the major shareholder".
