French term or phrase: travail du rêve
From an exhibition on Italian drawings from the 16th and 17th centuries.

« Comme le rêve le dessin », la formule, transposée du célèbre Ut pictura poesis classique, est à double entente mais sa signification explicite : il ne s’agit pas de montrer les images de rêve telles que l’histoire du dessin les a fixées, mais d’utiliser la notion de travail du rêve, élaborée notamment par la littérature psychanalytique, pour explorer le travail du dessin.

the notion of working on the dream, the work of the dream, the study of dreams?

Sorry if this is obvious, but nothing seems to sound English to me at the moment :-(

dream-work
Explanation:
This is the psychoanalytical notion. The hyphen is important.

Dream-work is the work that needs to be done to reveal the latent meaning of a dream; in the same vein a work of art can be analyzed to explore its meaning.

Lapsus, I apologize. It's the other way round: Dream-work transforms the latent dream into the manifest dream, the opposite being the work of interpretation.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I did some further research, and dream-work is definitely the established translation for "travail du reve" in pyschoanalysis. I doubt I would have found it without you. Thanks so much!

disagree  Sandra Petch: That would be "travail de rêve" - je suis traductrice, j'ai un travail de rêve (a dream job).

stuff of dreams

Explanation:
As in 'This is the stuff of dreams' and possibly carries the ambiguity / double entendre alluded to in the source you provided. However, without more context I can't be more inventive. (I had considered 'dreamworks' but to use a good old UK expression that might be a bit naff :-)

agree  Susan Nicholls: this is definitely the psychoanalytic term

agree  Melissa McMahon: yes, this is a technical term: displacement and condensation - I understand it as the work the unconscious does to conceal the meaning rather than the work done to reveal it though
