I don't see anythig "clever" in the context. But, since it exists in the source language, It's not that we don't have an equivalent for it in Arabic.
I might say "clever" here denotes "complicated action". I reached this conclusion when I read "...and in this way also..." which implies that two things are achieved by one action. Shouldn't we call this smart or clever? That's why I picked ذكية
Also I suggest that you look deeply in the context. For example, you may find out that "clever" was the guy who discovered this mode of action :)

For a few years, doctors have had a new type of treatment which intervenes on the level of the HER-2 receptor. This approach exploits one of the principles of the immune system, namely that defence cells produce proteins called antibodies that also fit into the lock like a key, and in this way also prevent the multiplication of bacteria or viruses.
