Source text - English Imagine you go on a hike and your destination is the summit of a tall mountain. There are two different routes to choose from. One of them winds across a narrow and steep goat trail covered with tree roots and rocks. The other is flat and straight, and soon leads towards a chairlift that will bring you right to the top. Which route would you take?
To me the choice would be easy. I just love scrambling my way through rugged terrain like a mountain goat, relying on each and every one of my muscles, whereas a flat road oft travelled and a crowded lift would be an unimaginable bore to my mind and body.
This rocky road may be long and not always well marked. Sometimes I will discover I am holding the map upside down and have to retrace my steps. I must be careful not to run out of provisions and keep my first-aid kit close at hand. I see people turning back, telling me the path is blocked. I hear rumours about the path not being needed anymore, because there is a chairlift now.
But no matter how fast and effortlessly the chairlift may be able to bring me to the top, I know it will not give me the experience I am looking for. I might taste the wild blueberries growing at the summit, but wouldn’t know the bliss of encountering them on a desolate road. I might see photographs of chamois displayed at the summit, but I wouldn’t know the joy of watching them feed their young in their native habitat. The sun might be shining at the summit, but I wouldn’t know the warm feeling of relief when watching it pop up from behind the clouds after hours of hiking in rain and fog.
By using the chairlift, I can reach the summit and get a glimpse of what others have accomplished. But it will not make for interesting tales.
By taking the road less travelled, I will find unexpected and surprising beauty that others may have overlooked, and new obstacles that may need to be addressed. I will truly understand everything the mountain has to offer.
When you want humans to visit your mountain, will you tell them the story told by the chairlift user or the one by the hiker who made the effort to really get to know everything that grows and lives on the mountain?
Translation - Dutch Beeld je in dat je erop uittrekt in de bergen en een hoge top wil beklimmen. Je kunt kiezen tussen twee routes. Aan de ene kant heb je een smal en sterk begroeid paadje dat langs de rotswand stijl naar boven kronkelt en bestrooid is met keien. Aan de andere kant heb je een brede en vlakke weg die je naar een stoeltjeslift brengt, waarmee je rechtstreeks naar de top kan. Welke weg zou je kiezen?
Voor mij is de keuze vanzelfsprekend. Ik vind het fantastisch om als een berggeit door ruw en onherbergzaam terrein naar boven te klauteren en al mijn spieren te laten werken. Een vlakke weg en een drukke lift lijken me dan weer onvoorstelbaar saai en afstompend.
Het hobbelige pad is lang en niet overal even goed bewegwijzerd. Af en toe stel ik vast dat ik de kaart ondersteboven probeer te lezen en kan ik niet anders dan een eindje teruglopen. Ik moet opletten dat ik toekom met mijn proviand en mijn EHBO-set houd ik maar beter binnen handbereik. Ik kom mensen tegen die op de terugweg zijn en me vertellen dat het pad versperd is. Er gaan geruchten dat we het pad niet langer nodig hebben, omdat er nu een stoeltjeslift is.
Maar hoe vlot en moeiteloos de stoeltjeslift me ook naar de top kan brengen, ik weet dat het mij geen voldoening zou geven. Op de top kan ik misschien wel de wilde bosbessen proeven die er groeien, maar ik zou nooit weten hoe heerlijk ze smaken als je ze onverwachts tegenkomt naast een verlaten weg. Op de top kan ik misschien foto’s van gemzen bekijken op informatiepanelen, maar ik zou nooit weten hoe prachtig het is om ze in levenden lijve hun jongen te zien voeden. Op de top kan ik misschien de zon zien schijnen, maar ik zou nooit weten hoe verlossend het voelt om haar eindelijk tussen de wolken door te zien piepen na uren ploeteren in regen en mist.
Door de vlakke weg te kiezen en de stoeltjeslift te nemen, kan ik de top bereiken en een glimp opvangen van wat anderen hebben bereikt. Maar een interessant verhaal zal dat niet opleveren.
Door de uitdagende weg te kiezen, zal ik onverwachte en verrassende schoonheid vinden die anderen misschien zijn ontgaan, en nieuwe hindernissen die uit de weg moeten worden geruimd. Ik zal ten volle begrijpen wat de berg te bieden heeft.
Als je nieuwe mensen wil overhalen om je berg te bezoeken, vertel je ze dan het verhaal van de persoon die met de stoeltjeslift naar boven is gegaan, of dat van de wandelaar die oog had voor elk grassprietje dat er groeit en elk vogeltje dat er woont?

Source text - English Fran’s friends Brenda and Steve were staying on the campground as well and they took us on a very long trail ride along plains and hills, through rivers and across steep mountain ridges. On the trail I saw countless bright yellow butterflies and flowers in all possible colours. The final destination was a burned forest on a mountain ridge, where we had a spectacular view on the mountains and valleys surrounding us. That evening we made sangria and roasted marshmallows on the campfire while Steve and Brenda told us exciting stories about bears and cougars.
Brenda and Steve are hardcore trail riders with well-trained bottoms. The rest of us felt like going for a shorter ride the next day, so we decided to show Jackie a trail we rode earlier that week while it was still raining. This time around, the sun was shining brightly in the sky. The trail lead us past two different lakes and a couple of adventurous goat trails where the horses had to tread very careful. Luckily for me it wasn’t Penny’s first time in the mountains and she pushed her way through without any hesitation.
We ate our lunch at the same spot as the first time, at the bottom of a waterfall that dropped from the rock wall above. While Fran, Irene and Jackie had a rest, I climbed up the mountain as far as I could. The view from up there and the sound of the waterfall triggered feelings of freedom, wanderlust and pure happiness. I could've sat there for hours.
We concluded our holiday with a surprisingly long trip towards Tim Barton’s Cabin. During this ride we had a stunning view on the Red Deer River and the mountains on the other side of the river. We rode across plains and rock ledges. Tim Barton’s Cabin turned out to be quite a bit further than we had expected and we had almost given up our search when we suddenly arrived at our destination. Sadly the Cabin was no longer open for visitors so we ate our lunch and returned to the campground somewhat disappointed.
Translation - Dutch Frans vrienden Brenda en Steve verbleven op dezelfde camping als wij en namen ons mee op een hele lange buitenrit langs vlakten en heuvels, door rivieren en over steile richels. Onderweg zag ik talloze felgele vlinders en bloemen in alle kleuren van de regenboog. Onze eindbestemming was een afgebrand bos bovenop een bergrichel, vanwaar we een ongelofelijk zicht hadden op de bergen en de dalen rondom ons. Die avond hebben we sangria gemaakt en met z’n allen marshmallows geroosterd op het kampvuur terwijl Steve en Brenda spannende verhalen vertelden over beren en poema’s.
Brenda en Steve zijn hardcore ruiters met een dikke eeltlaag op hun billen. Daarentegen hadden wij de volgende dag meer zin in een wat kortere rit, dus we besloten om Jackie mee te nemen op de wandeling die we eerder die week in de regen hadden gemaakt. Deze keer scheen de zon helder aan de hemel. De route leidde ons langs twee verschillende meren en over een aantal spannende goat trails waar de paarden uiterst voorzichtig moesten lopen. Gelukkig was het voor Penny niet de eerste keer in de bergen en baande ze zich er als een echte berggeit zonder aarzelen doorheen. We aten onze lunch op dezelfde plaats als de eerste keer, aan de voet van een waterval die van de rotsen sijpelde. Terwijl Fran, Irene en Jackie uitrustten, klom ik zo hoog als ik kon de rotsen op. Het zicht van daarboven en het geluid van de waterval wekten gevoelens van vrijheid, wanderlust en puur geluk bij me op.
We sloten onze vakantie af met een verrassend lange rit richting Tim Barton’s Cabin. Onderweg hadden we een prachtig zicht op de Red Deer River en de bergen aan de overkant van de rivier. We reden over vlaktes en rotsrichels. Tim Barton’s Cabin bleek heel wat verder te zijn dan we dachten en we hadden onze zoektocht bijna opgegeven, toen we plots toch onze bestemming bereikten. Jammer genoeg ontving de Cabin geen bezoekers meer, dus we aten onze lunch buiten en keerden enigszins teleurgesteld terug naar de camping.
