Cancer can start any place in the body. It starts when cells grow out of control and crowd out normal cells. This makes it hard for the body to work the way it should.
Cancer can be treated very well for many people. In fact, more people than ever before lead full lives after cancer treatment.
Here we will explain what cancer is and how it’s treated. You’ll find a list of words about cancer and what they mean at the end of this booklet.
Cancer basics
Cancer is not just one disease.
There are many types of cancer. It’s not just one disease. Cancer can start in the lungs, the breast, the colon, or even in the blood. Cancers are alike in some ways, but they are different in the ways they grow and spread.
How are cancers alike?
The cells in our bodies all have certain jobs to do. Normal cells divide in an orderly way. They die when they are worn out or damaged, and new cells take their place. Cancer is when the cells start to grow out of control. The cancer cells keep on growing and making new cells. They crowd out normal cells. This causes problems in the part of the body where the cancer started.
Cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body. For instance, cancer cells in the lung can travel to the bones and grow there. When cancer cells spread, it’s called metastasis (meh-TAS-tuh-sis). When lung cancer spreads to the bones, it’s still called lung cancer. To doctors, the cancer cells in the bones look just like the ones from the lung. It’s not called bone cancer unless it started in the bones.
How are cancers different?
Some cancers grow and spread fast. Others grow more slowly. They also respond to treatment in different ways. Some types of cancer are best treated with surgery; others respond better to drugs called chemotherapy (key-mo-THER-uh-pee). Often 2 or more treatments are used to get the best results.
When someone has cancer, the doctor will want to find out what kind of cancer it is. People with cancer need treatment that works for their type of cancer.
What are tumors?
Most cancers form a lump called a tumor or a growth. But not all lumps are cancer. Doctors take out a piece of the lump and look at it to find out if it’s cancer. Lumps that are not cancer are called benign (be-NINE). Lumps that are cancer are called malignant (muh-LIG-nunt).
There are some cancers, like leukemia (cancer of the blood), that don’t form tumors. They grow in the blood cells or other cells of the body.

What stage is the cancer?
The doctor also needs to know if and how far the cancer has spread from where it started. This is called the cancer stage. You may have heard other people say that their cancer was stage 1 or stage 2. Knowing the stage of the cancer helps the doctor decide what type of treatment is best.
For each type of cancer there are tests that can be done to figure out the stage of the cancer. As a rule, a lower stage (such as a stage 1 or 2) means that the cancer has not spread very much. A higher number (such as a stage 3 or 4) means it has spread more. Stage 4 is the highest stage.
Ask your doctor to explain the stage of your cancer and what it means for you.
How is cancer treated?
The most common treatments for cancer are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation (ray-dee-A- shun).
Surgery can be used to take out the cancer. The doctor might also take out some or all of the body part the cancer affects. For breast cancer, part (or all) of the breast might be removed. For prostate cancer, the prostate gland might be taken out. Surgery is not used for all types of cancer. For example, blood cancers like leukemia are best treated with drugs.
Chemo (short for chemotherapy) is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells or slow their growth. Some chemo can be given by IV (into a vein through a needle), and others are a pill you swallow. Because chemo drugs travel to nearly all parts of the body, they are useful for cancer that has spread.
Radiation is also used to kill or slow the growth of cancer cells. It can be used alone or with surgery or chemo. Radiation treatment is like getting an x-ray. Sometimes it’s given by putting a “seed” inside the cancer to give off the radiation.

What treatment is best for me?
Your cancer treatment will depend on what’s best for you. Some cancers respond better to surgery; others respond better to chemo or radiation. Knowing the type of cancer you have is the first step toward knowing which treatments will work best for you.
The stage of your cancer will also help the doctor decide on the best treatment for you. A stage 3 or 4 cancer is likely to respond better to treatments that treat the whole body, like chemo.
Your health and the treatment you prefer will also play a part in deciding about cancer treatment. Not all types of treatment will work for your cancer, so ask what options you have. And treatments do have side effects, so ask about what to expect with each treatment.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s your right to know what treatments are most likely to help and what their side effects may be.
Why did this happen to me?
People with cancer often ask, “What did I do wrong?” or “Why me?” Doctors don’t know for sure what causes cancer. When doctors can’t give a cause, people may come up with their own ideas about why it happened.
Some people think they’re being punished for something they did or didn’t do in the past. Most people wonder if they did something to cause the cancer.
If you’re having these feelings, you’re not alone. Thoughts and beliefs like this are common for people with cancer. You need to know that cancer is not a punishment for your past actions. Try to not blame yourself or focus on looking for ways you might have prevented cancer. Cancer is not your fault, and there’s almost never a way to find out what caused it. Instead, focus on taking good care of yourself now.

How to talk to your loved ones about cancer
It can be hard to talk about cancer, even with the people you love. Learning you have cancer can stir many feelings, such as sadness, anger, and fear. Sometimes it’s hard to know how you’re feeling, much less talk to others about it.
Your loved ones may also have a hard time talking about cancer. It’s not easy for them to know what to say to help you or make you feel better.
Here are some tips to help you and your loved ones deal with cancer:
Tell your family and friends about your cancer as soon as you feel up to it. Sooner or later, they’ll all know you have cancer. They might feel hurt or left out if they haven’t heard about it from you.
When you talk to them, explain what kind of cancer you have and how it will be treated. Let them know that no one can catch it from you.
Allow friends and family to help you, and tell them what kind of help you need. If you need a ride to the doctor’s office or hospital, let them know. If you need help around the house, let them know that, too. There may be times when you’re not sure what you need. That’s OK. Just let them know you aren’t sure, but you’ll let them know when you are.
Tell the people who are closest to you how you feel. This may not be easy, but it can be a very important way to get the support you need when you need it most. If you have trouble talking about your feelings, you might find a support group or a mental health counselor to help you.
If you have friends or family who tell you to “cheer up” when you’re not feeling good, it’s OK to ask them to just listen, and not tell you what to do. Sometimes you need to talk about what’s going on without getting advice in return.
If some people are not OK with talking about your feelings, don’t be upset. Try talking to others who might listen.
You may not be able to do things you were doing before you got cancer. If that’s true, let your family and friends know.
It’s best for your family and friends to keep doing the things they did before you had cancer. They should not feel guilty about doing this.

أساسيات السّرطان

كيف تتشابه أنواع السّرطان؟
إنّ جميع خلايا أجسامنا تمتلك وظيفةً محددة، وفي العادة تنقسم الخلايا العادية بطريقة طبيعية. حيث تموت هذه الخلايا عندما تتهتّك أو تتلف وتحل مكانها خلايا جديدة. يحدث السّرطان عندما تبدأ الخلايا بالنمو بطريقة خارجة عن السيطرة فتستمر بالنمو وتكوين خلايا جديدة تزاحم وتحشر الخلايا العادية. مما يؤدي إلى حدوث مشاكل في جزء الجسم الذي بدأ فيه السّرطان. وتستطيع خلايا السّرطان أيضًا أن تنتقل لأجزاء أخرى من الجسم، فعلى سبيل المثال، يمكن لخلايا السّرطان التي نشأت في الرئتين أنت تنتقل إلى العظام وتنمو هناك. وعندما تبدأ خلايا السّرطان بالانتشار تُسمى خلايا خبيثة. وفي حال انتقال السّرطان من الرئتين إلى العظام يبقى اسمه سرطان الرئة فبالنسبة للأطباء خلايا السّرطان الموجودة في العظام تبدو تمامًا كتلك الخلايا القادمة من الرئتين. فلا يسمى سرطان العظام بهذا إلا عندما يبدأ في العظام.
كيف تختلف أنواع السّرطان؟
بعض السّرطانات تنمو وتنتشر بشكل سريع وبعضها الآخر بشكل بطيء، حتى أنها تستجيب للعلاج بطرق مختلفة، فبعض أنواع السّرطان تعتبر الجراحة أفضل وسيلة لعلاجها، وبعضها تستجيب بشكل أفضل لأدوية تُعرف بالعلاج الكيميائي، وفي الغالب يتم استخدام طريقتي علاج فأكثر للحصول على أفضل النتائج. فعندما يصاب شخص ما بالسّرطان يحتاج الطبيب ليعرف ما نوع السّرطان؛ ليحصل المريض على العلاج الصحيح لنوع السّرطان المصاب به.
ما هي الأورام؟
معظم السّرطانات تكوّن كتلاً تعرف بالأورام ولكن ليست كل الأورام سرطان. لذلك يقوم الأطباء بأخذ عينة من هذه الأورام ويفحصونها لمعرفة فيما إذا كانت سرطانًا أم لا. الأورام التي ليست سرطانًا تسمى أورامًا حميدة أما الأورام السّرطانية فتسمى أورامًا خبيثة. ونجد أنّ بعض السّرطانات مثل سرطان الدم (اللوكيميا) لا تكون أورامًا فتنمو في خلايا الدم أو خلايا الجسم الأخرى.
تقول دلوريس أحد محاربي السّرطان: هناك شعورٌ بالخوف يسري في داخلك عندما تعلم أنك مصاب بالسّرطان، وفي البداية سيكون من الصعب جدًا التفكير في أي شيء باستثناء تشخيصك بالمرض وسيبقى هذا أول ما تفكر به كلّ صباح، و أريد أن يعلم كل المصابون بالسّرطان أنّ الحديث عنه يساعد في التعامل مع كل المشاعر الجديدة التي يشعرون بها ، وليتذكروا أنه لا بأس أن يشعروا بالإحباط في بعض الأحيان .
السّرطان، في أي مرحلة هو؟
لربما سمعت أشخاصًا يقولون إنهم في المرحلة الأولى أو الثانية من السّرطان، ومرحلة السّرطان هي معرفة فيما إذا استطاع الورم أن ينتشر وإلى أي مدى. ويحتاج الطبيب لمعرفة مرحلة السّرطان الأمر الذي يساعد الطبيب في تحديد طريقة العلاج الأفضل.
وإنّ لكل نوع من السّرطان اختبارات مختلفة للكشف عن مرحلة السرطان، و كقاعدة: المرحلة الأقل (كالدرجة الأولى والثانية) تعني أن السّرطان لم ينتشر كثيرًا. في المقابل، فإن أعدادًا أكبر (كالدرجة الثالثة أو الرابعة) تعني أنّ السّرطان انتشر أكثر، وتعتبر المرحلة الرابعة هي الأعلى درجةً.
كيف يُعالج السّرطان؟
إنّ أشهر طرق علاج السّرطان هي الجراحة والعلاج الكيميائي والعلاج بالإشعاع. يتم إجراء الجراحة لإزالة الورم أو قد يقوم الطبيب بإزالة جزء من العضو أو العضو كلّه الذي أصابه السّرطان. ففي حالة سرطان الثدي يمكن إزالة جزء من الثدي أو الثدي كله. وفي سرطان البروستات قد يتم إزالة الغدة كلّها. وبالتأكيد لا يتم إجراء جراحة لجميع أنواع السّرطان فمثلاً بعض سرطانات الدم مثل اللوكيميا تعتبر العقارات أفضل طريقة لعلاجها.
أما العلاج الكيميائي فهو استخدام الأدوية لقتل الخلايا السرطانية أو إبطاء سرعة نموها، بعض العلاجات الكيميائية تعطى عن طريق الوريد على شكل حقن وريدية، وبعضها على شكل أقراص للبلع، ولأن الأدوية التي تعطى في العلاج الكيميائي تنتقل تقريباً إلى جميع أجزاء الجسم فإنها تعتبر مفيدة في الحالات التي انتشر فيها الورم.
وكذلك يستخدم العلاج بالإشعاع لقتل الخلايا السّرطانية أو إبطاء سرعة نموها، ويمكن استخدام الإشعاع وحده في العلاج أو إلى جانب الجراحة والعلاج الكيميائي. يتم العلاج بالإشعاع باستخدام الأشعة السّينية وفي بعض الأحيان يتم وضع عنصر مشع داخل الورم نفسه لإطلاق الإشعاع.
ما هو أفضل علاج لي؟
علاج السّرطان يعتمد على ما هو الأفضل لك، فبعض أنواع السّرطان تستجيب بشكل أفضل للجراحة وبعضها الآخر للعلاج الكيميائي أو الإشعاع. وبالتالي فإن معرفة نوع السّرطان المصاب به هو الخطوة الأولى لمعرفة أي طرق العلاج هي الأفضل لك. و معرفة مرحلة السّرطان أيضأ ستساعد الطبيب في تحديد طريقة العلاج الأفضل بالنسبة إليك، فمرحلة السّرطان الثالثة أو الرابعة تستجيب بشكل أفضل للعلاجات التي تشمل الجسد كله مثل العلاج الكيميائي.
إنّ صحتك وطريقة العلاج التي تفضلها تلعب دورًا أيضًا في تحديد طريقة علاجك، فليست كل طرق العلاج ستنفع في علاجك؛ لذلك اسأل طبيبك عن خيارات العلاج التي تمتلكها. واسأل أيضًا عن الآثار الجانبية لطرق العلاج وعمّا يجب أن تتوقعه من كل واحدة. لا تكن خائفًا من طرح الأسئلة، فمن حقك أن تعرف ما هي طرق العلاج التي من المحتمل أن تساعدك أكثر و آثاراها الجانبية التي يمكن أن تحدث.
لم أصابني هذا؟
يتساءل مرضى السّرطان غالبًا "ما الخطأ الذي فعلته؟" أو "لم أنا؟" والأطباء لا يعرفون بالتأكيد ما الذي يسبب السّرطان، وعندما لا يستطيع الأطباء تقديم الأسباب يبدأ الناس بإيجاد الأسباب من أفكارهم الخاصة، فبعض الأشخاص يعتقدون أنهم يُعاقبون على شيء فعلوه أو لم يفعلوه في الماضي فمعظم الناس يتساءلون فيما إذا فعلوا شيئًا فأُصيبوا بالسّرطان.
في حال كانت لديك مثل هذه المشاعر، اطمئن أنت لست وحيدًا، فمثل هذه الأفكار والمعتقدات شائعة بين مرضى السّرطان، وعليك أن تعرف أن السّرطان ليس عقابًا للماضي، لذلك حاول ألا تلُم نفسك أو ركز على البحث عن طرق قد حاولت بها حماية نفسك من السّرطان. السّرطان ليس خطؤك، وليس هناك طريقة قطعية لمعرفة ما الذي سبّبه، لذلك ركز الآن على الحصول على رعاية جيدة لنفسك.
كيف تخبر أحباءك المقربين عن مرضك؟

* عندما تتحدث إليهم وضح لهم نوع المرض الذي لديك وطريقة علاجه.
* اسمح لعائلتك وأصدقائك بمساعدتك، وأخبرهم عن نوع المساعدة التي تحتاج، وأخبرهم بحاجتك بالذهاب إلى مكتب الطبيب أو المستشفى. وربما تمرّ بك أوقات تكون فيها لست متأكدًا مما تحتاج ولا بأس بذلك، ولكن دعهم يعرفون أنك لست متأكدًا وأنك ستخبرهم بمجرد أن تعرف.

تقول هيلين أحد محاربي السّرطان: أول مرة تقول فيها أنا مصاب بالسرطان بصوت عالٍ هي الأصعب، وكلّما ردّدتها أكثر يصبح من الأسهل نطق هذه الكلمات، كلما تحدثت عن مرضي بسرطان الثدي أكثر كلّما أصبح من الأسهل عليّ أن أتقبل ما أمرّ به، ولقد شعرت بعض الأحيان بالغرابة عندما كان عليّ أن أبتهج وأنا أتكلم عن مرضي.

The COVID-19 pandemic poses one of the greatest threats in recent human history as the virus has spread rapidly worldwide, affecting the lives and livelihoods of billions. As of June 30, 2020, according to WHO, more than 1 million cases of COVID-19 had been confirmed in its Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) alone, with considerable differences in the scale and progression of the pandemic in different countries.1 With national governments at the forefront of response and mixed reactions displayed by political and public health leaders, decisive leadership is emerging as a key factor in determining success.
Examples of effective responses around the world and in the EMR include rapid response, good coordination, an evidence-based approach that is well communicated, and partnership spirit. Numerous factors have been proposed to account for the variation in the numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths relative to population. For example, the disparities in health system capacities must be acknowledged, although the pandemic has even overwhelmed some countries with advanced capacities.2 Demographics could be important, with the high numbers of cases and deaths in Italy possibly partly due to an elderly population and high prevalence of comorbidities, as well as cultural factors such as high levels of socialisation, which might influence compliance with public health measures.3 Nevertheless, the role of leadership in pandemic response remains undeniable.

A recognised characteristic of decisive leadership is rapid response, based on a clear understanding of the threat posed by COVID-19 and that delayed action could lead to worse outcomes. In a study of national responses, there was substantial variation in the rate and speed at which stricter measures were adopted.4 Even for similar lockdown measures, earlier implementation was associated with better outcomes.5 In Germany and New Zealand, leaders have been praised for their decisive action. Some have attributed the success of these countries to their female leaders.6 Meanwhile, the Jordanian Government suspended study in educational institutions and stopped religious gatherings in places of worship within 12 days of its first case.7
Effective leaders ensure good coordination, given the socioeconomic and health dimensions of the pandemic. Learning from previous disease outbreaks, Singapore established a multiministry taskforce to centrally coordinate a whole-of-government response before it had any confirmed cases.8 The creation of the National COVID-19 Monitoring Authority in Tunisia has brought together senior officials from all ministries to ensure compliance with measures across sectors, as well as coordination between regional and national committees.9 The Lebanese Government has developed a COVID-19 response plan that involves the private as well as the public sector.10 Decentralised systems have at times been identified as a problem, although this may only be when combined with poor communication; despite initial delays, Switzerland has shown the effectiveness of mutual learning and integration between local decentralised approaches in its response to COVID-19.11
Science guides decisive and impactful actions by leaders in countries where success is being recorded in the COVID-19 response. Implementation of large-scale lockdown measures has substantially reduced the number of COVID-19 cases—eg, estimates suggest that 2·1 million more COVID-19 cases have been avoided in Italy because of lockdown measures.12 Establishing testing capacity was part of the first stage of South Africa's response, and after easing of its national lockdown, contact tracing teams for tuberculosis control were redirected to proactive COVID-19 case finding, contact tracing, and monitoring quarantine compliance, which has resulted in community-based screening of almost 20% of the population.13 Ultimately, given that high-quality disease surveillance data are sometimes not readily available, decisions should be based on best available knowledge, while adapting to new information.
Decisive leadership appreciates the need for trusted public communication. Although government action is necessary to implement wide-scale measures, individual behaviour rather than governmental action is also important in limiting the spread of COVID-19, with emphasis on the importance of ensuring individual rights.14, 15 In Jordan and Morocco, for example, the governments have harnessed the potential of information technology to set up a website9 and app16 for epidemiological information and surveillance. Building trust requires clear and consistent communication based on reliable sources, thus promoting transparency and accountability. Political partisanship negatively affects health behaviours and policy preferences, thus impacting success or failure of the COVID-19 response.17 Factors that undermine trust such as political polarisation should be deliberately addressed by leaders. Effective communication needs to emphasise a shared identity against the COVID-19 threat.
Finally, effective leaders believe in a partnership-driven solidarity response to the pandemic. It starts with adherence to the measures defined by the International Health Regulations (2005). Transparency in sharing data is crucial, as shown by South Korea, which shared relevant information with agencies such as WHO from its first confirmed case.18 More countries have shown solidarity in financial support, donations of medical supplies, and sharing expertise at this time of unprecedented crisis. Saudi Arabia, for example, has donated financially to pandemic response efforts,19 while Cuba has sent doctors to other countries to support their response.20 Partnership among countries is essential for obtaining faster results in COVID-19 treatment and vaccine clinical trials and WHO is supporting global partnerships through its Solidarity Fund, COVID-19 Supply Chain System, and Solidarity Trial.21, 22 A pandemic that presents a global threat requires all leaders to step up and cooperate in decisive action.

فرضت جائحة فيروس كوفيد-19 واحد من أخطر التهديدات في تاريخ الإنسان المعاصر، حيث انتشر الفيروس بسرعة مهددًا حياة وأرزاق المليارات حول العالم. وفقًا لمنظمة الصحة العالمية فإنه في الثلاثين من يونيو 2020 تم تأكيد أكثر من مليون حالة مصابة بفيروس كوفيد-19 في منطقة الشرق الأوسط فقط، مع الأخذ بعين الاعتبار الاختلاف في مدى تطور الجائحة في الدول المختلفة. فيما يتعلق بالتعامل مع هذه الجائحة، تأتي الحكومات الوطنية وإلى جانبها المواقف المختلفة للقادة السياسيين وقادة قطاع الصحة العام في الصدارة حيث تظهر القيادة الحازمة كعامل أساسي لتحقيق النجاح في مواجهة الجائحة.

أظهر القادة تنظيمًا جيدًا لأبعاد الجائحة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والصحية. بناءً على ما تم تعلمه من الأمراض المتفشية سابقًا، شكلت سنغافورة وحدة متعددة الوزارات لتنظيم تعامل الحكومة مع الجائحة كليًا من قبل تأكيد أي إصابات حتى. كما تم تشكيل سلطة وطنية لمتابعة فيروس كوفيد-19 في تونس وعلى إثره تم استدعاء المسؤولين الأعلى منصبًا من كل الوزارات للتأكد من الامتثال لكل الإجراءات والتدابير في كل القطاعات، وكذلك التنسيق بين المؤسسات الإقليمية والوطنية. وكذلك قامت الحكومة اللبنانية بوضع خطة لمواجهة فيروس كوفيد-19 والتي تشمل القطاعين الخاص والعام. أما الأنظمة اللامركزية فقد شكلت مشكلة في وقتٍ ما، ولكن ذلك يكون فقط عندما يكون التواصل ضعيف، وبالرغم من التأجيلات الأولى إلا أن سويسرا أثبتت فعالية التعلم المتبادل واندماج المناهج المحلية اللامركزية في مواجهة فيروس كوفيد-19.
إنّ العلم هو الذي يوجه مواقف القادة الحاسمة والمؤثرة في البلاد التي سجل فيها نجاحًا في مواجهة فيروس كوفيد-19. وقد ساعد تطبيق إجراء الإغلاق الكامل على نطاق واسع جوهريًا في تقليل عدد الإصابات بفيروس كوفيد-19. تشير التقديرات بأنه قد تم تفادي أكثر من 2.1 مليون إصابة محتملة في إيطاليا بفعل تدابير الغلق الكامل. أما عن جنوب إفريقيا فقد كان تشكيل وحدة اختبارات جزء من المرحلة الأولى في مواجهتها للفيروس، وبعد تخفيف الغلق الكامل، تم التواصل مع فرق تقفي مرض السل وإعادة توجيهيهم للبحث عن حالات مصابة بفيروس كوفيد-19 ومتابعة الالتزام بالحجر، والذي ساعد في إجراء فحص لأكثر من 20% من السكان. وفي بعض الأحيان قد لا تتوفر معلومات دقيقة عن المرض، ولذلك يجب أن تكون القرارات مبنية على أفضل المعلومات المتوفرة وملاءمتها مع المعلومات الجديدة.
إنّ القيادة الحكيمة تقدر الحاجة إلى تواصل موثوق مع العامة. بالرغم أن عمل الحكومة ضروري لتطبيق الإجراءات على نطاق واسع، إلا أن السلوك الفردي -عدا عن موقف الحكومة- مهم أيضًا في الحد من انتشار كوفيد-19 مع التأكيد على أهمية الحقوق الفردية. على سبيل المثال قامت الحكومات في الأردن والمغرب بتسخير الإمكانيات التكنولوجية لبناء موقع أو تطبيق إلكتروني للمعلومات الوبائية والمراقبة. إنّ بناء الثقة يتطلب تواصل شفاف ومستمر قائمًا على مصادر موثوقة لتعزيز الشفافية والمسئولية. أما التحزب السياسي فإنه يؤثر سلبًا على الإجراءات الصحية وسياسة الأفضليات وبالتالي يؤثر على نجاح أو فشل مواجهة الفيروس. هذه العوامل التي من شأنها أن تقلّل الثقة مثل التحزّب السياسي يجب أن تعالج برويّة من قبل القادة. حيث أنّ التواصل الفعّال يحتاج إلى التأكيد على الهوية المشتركة في مواجهة تهديد فيروس كوفيد-19.
ختامًا، إنّ القادة المؤثرين يؤمنون بأنّ روح المشاركة هي أساس التماسك في مواجهة الجائحة. والتي تبدأ بالالتزام بالإجراءات التي تحددها قوانين الصحة العالمية، كما أنّ الشفافية في مشاركة المعلومات أمر مهم جدًا كما أظهرت كوريا الجنوبية التي كشفت عن المعلومات ذات الصلة بالفيروس من خلال عدة وكالات مثل منظمة الصحة العالمية منذ أول حالة إصابة تم تأكيدها. وهناك دول أكثر أظهرت تكافلاً في إطار الدعم المالي والتبرع للمساعدات الطبية، ومشاركة الخبرات في هذا الوقت من الأزمة غير المسبوقة. حيث قامت المملكة العربية السعودية بالتبرع ماليًا لدعم الجهود في مواجهة الجائحة، كما قامت كوبا بإرسال أطباء لمساعدة البلاد الأخرى في تصديها للجائحة. إنّ روح المشاركة بين الدول أمر مهم جدًا للحصول على نتائج أسرع في علاج فيروس كوفيد-19 والتجارب الطبية للقاحات. كما وتقوم منظمة الصحة العالمية بدعم روح المشاركة العالمية من خلال صندوق التكافل ونظام سلسلة دعم فيروس كوفيد-19 واختبار التكافل. إنّ هذه الجائحة تفرض تهديدًا عالميًا يوجب على كل القادة أن يتعاونوا ويأخذوا موقفًا حازمًا.
