Source text - English DURING the last ten years the methods of inquiry into the historical development of civilization have undergone remarkable changes. During the second half of the last century evolutionary thought held almost complete sway and investigators like Spencer, Morgan, Tylor, Lubbock, to mention only a few, were under the spell of the idea of a general, uniform evolution of culture in which all parts of mankind participated. The newer development goes back in part to the influence of Ratzel whose geographical training impressed him with the importance of diffusion and migration. The problem of diffusion was taken up in detail particularly in America, but was applied in a much wider sense by Foy and Graebner, and finally seized upon in a still wider application by Elliot Smith and Rivers, so that at the present time, at least among certain groups of investigators in England and also in Germany, ethnological research is based on the concept of migration and dissemination rather than upon that of evolution. A critical study of these two directions of inquiry shows that each is founded on the application of one fundamental hypothesis. The evolutionary point of view presupposes that the course of historical changes in the cultural life of mankind follows definite laws which are applicable everywhere, and which bring it about that cultural development is, in its main lines, the same among all races and all peoples. This idea is clearly expressed by Tylor in the introductory pages of his classic work "Primitive Culture." As soon as we admit that the hypothesis of a uniform evolution has to be proved before it can be accepted, the whole structure loses its foundation. It is true that there are indications of parallelism of development in different parts of the world, and that similar customs are found in the most diverse and widely separated parts of the globe. The occurrence of these similarities which are distributed so irregularly that they cannot readily be explained on the basis of diffusion, is one of the foundations of the evolutionary hypothesis, as it was the foundation of Bastian's psychologizing treatment of cultural phenomena. On the other hand, it may be recognized that the hypothesis implies the thought that our modern Western European civilization represents the highest cultural development towards which all other more primitive cultural types tend, and that, therefore, retrospectively, we construct an orthogenetic development towards our own modern civilization. It is clear that if we admit that there may be different ultimate and coexisting types of civilization, the hypothesis of one single general line of development cannot be maintained.
Translation - Portuguese Durante os últimos dez anos os métodos de inquirição no desenvolvimento histórico da civilização sofreram mudanças marcáveis. Durante a segunda metade do ultimo século o pensamento evolutivo manteve-se quase em completa oscilação, e investigadores como Spencer, Morgan, Taylor, Lubbok, para citar apenas alguns, estiveram sob a maldição da idéia de uma evolução cultural geral e uniforme em que todas as frações da humanidade participaram. O mais recente desenvolvimento volta, em parte, a influencia de Ratzel cujo treinamento geográfico impressionou com a importância da disseminação e migração. O problema da disseminação foi retomado detalhadamente em particular na America, mas foi utilizado em um sentido muito mais amplo por Foy e Grabner, e finalmente aproveitada em uma aplicação ainda mais ampla por Elliot Smith e Rivers, sendo que no presente momento, ao menos entre certos grupos de investigadores na Inglaterra e também na Alemanha, a pesquisa etnológica é baseada no conceito de migração e disseminação em oposição ao conceito de evolução.

É verdade que existem indícios de paralelismo de desenvolvimento em diferentes partes do mundo, e que costumes similares são encontrados na mais mais diversas e consideravelmente isoladas partes do globo. A ocorrência dessas similaridades que estão tão irregularmente distribuídas que não podem ser imediatamente explicadas com base na disseminação, é um dos fundamentos da hipótese evolucionária, e este foi o fundamento do tratamento psicologizante do fenômeno cultural de Bastian. Por outro lado, pode-se reconhecer que esta hipótese implica na idéia de que nossa civilização ocidental européia moderna representa o mais alto desenvolvimento cultural sobre todas os outros tipos de culturas de tendência mais primitiva, e que, portanto, retroativamente, nós construímos um desenvolvimento ortogenético sobre nossa própria civilização moderna. É claro que se nós admitirmos que podem existir tipos de civilizações supremas e coexistindo, a hipótese de uma linha geral de desenvolvimento não pode ser mantida.

Source text - English I've never been a huge fan of the Apple Watch, although I've got to give Apple CEO Tim Cook credit for not giving up on it, and refining it into what's now a clear success.
I'm not a watch wearer, so that was one knock for me, plus the initial dependence on the iPhone, apps that did virtually nothing and a watch face that was too small to enjoy were my quibbles. Cook has since solved two of the three issues. And this week, the Apple redesign of the next edition of the Watch went even further.
Who knew that an event devoted to launching three new iPhone models – including a top-of-the-line device that's bigger, more powerful and expensive than any that preceded it would play second fiddle to the fourth edition of the Apple Watch?
We're talking about a device used by over a billion people – the iPhone – compared with an accessory that analysts say have sold about 15 million units – yes, the Apple Watch. And with the announcement this week, you have the choice to put your money down for the biggest iPhone out there to date – with the biggest price tag, edging up to $1,500 for the maxed out model – or a watch that can do an ECG and contact 911 if you fall.
A watch can do this? A $399 device that rests on your arm? That you bring with you everywhere you go? With a bigger watch face to make it easier to see those pesky apps? Wow.
