Source text - English The young Winston Churchill was a visitor to Sancti Spiritus in 1895. Riding with the Spanish army, he became involved in a skirmish with the mambí Cuban Independence fighters at Arroyo Blanco, east of the city. He narrowly escaped being shot, and later recalled the experience in his memoirs: "There is nothing more exhilarating than to be shot at without result."
Arriving in the city itself, he was not in the least impressed, immediately dismissing it as "a very second-rate and most unhealthy place." Perhaps he had drunk from the River Yayabo, for years the city's only source of water, despite its impurities.
Nowadays things have changed, and Sancti Spiritus has a modern viaduct, which brings in fresh water from the nearby hills. In spite of this, there is still a tradition of drinking the river water, filtered of course, and served in a 'porron'--a small earthenware jug. Almost everyone who crosses the Yayabo Bridge stops at a public watering place called El Porrón for a welcome thirst quencher. Don't worry about Churchill's warning--you're unlikely to face even the danger of a stomach upset here now, let alone yellow fever or bullets. Yet if that had been the case back then, he would surely have complained that the town was too dull.
Translation - Spanish Cuando joven, Winston Churchill visitó a Sancti Spíritus en 1895. Cabalgando con la armada Española, se vio involucrado en una escaramuza con los combatientes para la independencia Cubana mambís, al este de la ciudad. Se escapó por un pelo de ser baleado, para luego anotar acerca de la experiencia en sus memorias: "No hay nada mas alborozador que ser el blanco de tiros y salir ileso."
Al llegar a la ciudad en sí, esta no le causó para nada una buena impresión, descartandola inmediatamente como "un lugar de orden secundario, y muy insalubre." Quizas habia bebido del Rio Yayabo--durante años la unica fuente de agua potable, a pesar de sus impurezas.
Hoy en dia las cosas han cambiado, y Sanctus Spírius tiene un viaducto moderno, el cual trae agua fresca desde las colinas circundantes. A pesar de esto, perdura todavía la tradición de tomar agua del rio, filtrada por supuesto, y servida en un porrón--una jarra de barro cocido. Casi todos los que cruzan el puente del Yayabo paran en un lugar público denominado El Porrón para tomar un bienvenido trago de refrescante agua. No se preocupen por la advertencia de Churchill--uno corre muy poca posiblidad de tener un desarreglo estomacal hoy en dia, ni mucho menos de ser vicitima ni de la fiebre amarilla ni de las balas. Por lo tanto, si eso hubiese sido el caso en ese entonces, él seguramente se hubiese quejado de que el pueblo fuera aburrido.

Source text - Spanish La promesa de la tecnología siempre fue que iba a dejarnos más tiempo libre. Sin embargo, nunca tuvimos tantos artefactos a nuestra disposición y, a la vez, tan pocos instantes para el descanso, el esparcimiento o el simple "no hacer ada" como ahora.
El 'hobby' es la expresión máxima del ocio. Significa dedicarle tiempo y dinero a aquello que nos gusta, sólo por placer.
Hubo una época, anterior a la televisión, en que la mayoría practicaba un 'hobby'. El mercado tenía menos para ofrecer a los consumidores. Se vivía con lo justo. Y fabricar uno mismo determinados elementos para la casa era lo habitual.
Translation - English Technology always promised to give us more free time. Nevertheless, we've never had so many gadgets at our disposal and, at the same time, so few moments to rest, relax or simply "do nothing"as we do nowadays.
A hobby is the maximum expression of idleness. It means dedicating time and money to whatever we like to do, just for the fun of it.
There was a time, before television, when most people had some sort of hobby. The market had less to offer the consumer. People got by with the basics. And fabricating a certain amount of one's own household implements was common.

I was born in Cuba, but was raised in the U.S. State of New Jersey where I went to primary school and later High School. I studied at Boston University as an English mayor from 1972 to 1974. I lived in Paris, France from 1974 to 1977 where I worked and studied French. I traveled to South America in 1979, later publishing a book in English called THE PANAMERICAN describing my travels. I finally settled in Argentina, where I have been living since 1985.
Nací en Cuba, pero me crié en los Estados Unidos en el estado de Nueva Jersey donde asistí a la primaria, y luego la secundaria. Estudié letras inglesas en la Universidad de Boston desde 1972 hasta 1974. Viví en Paris, Francia desde 1974 hata 1977 donde trabajaba y estudiaba francés. Viajé a Sud America en 1979, para despues publicar un libro en inglés llamado THE PANAMERICAN donde describo aquel viaje. Finalmente vine a vivir en la Argentina donde estoy radicada desde 1985.
