Source text - Portuguese O Jiu-jitsu se originou muitos anos atrás, na India, na época de Buda. Os monges budistas viajavam muito e eram saqueados. Para evitar isto, eles inventaram uma forma de defesa e dai nasceu o jiu-jitsu. Jiu-jitsu ao pé da letra significa “arte suave” e tem três princípios básicos: a técnica, a alavanca e a base. Depois da India, o Jiu-jitsu ficou conhecido na China e posteriormente no Japão. No Japão, deu um grande salto tornando-se o que é hoje em dia. Também inventaram o kimono. Do Japão veio para o Brasil em 1914 através do lutador Mitsuyo Maeda.
Os Gracies aprenderam Jiu-Jitsu com Maeda e vieram para o Rio de Janeiro montando a primeira academia brasileira de jiu-jitsu cujo endereço era na Rua Marques de Abrantes no Flamengo em 1925, e de lá para cá o jiu-jitsu foi muito aperfeiçoado pela familia gracie. Os gracies eram, Carlos, Gastão, Helio, e outros, sempre fazendo um marketing muito agressivo desafiando todos para mostrar eficiência da arte do Jiu-jitsu. Helio Gracie, aperfeiçoou o jiu-jitsu de tal forma que deu condições para que uma pessoa magra pudesse lutar contra uma pessoa grande e forte, tornando-se o pai do jiu-jitsu brasileiro, e de lá para cá, o "gracie jiu-jitsu" só tem vitórias. Mais tarde, os Gracies mudaram a academia para o Centro da Cidade na Av.Rio Branco 151, 17 e 18 andar, e de lá para cá a academia gracie e os gracies sempre lutaram vale tudo. Em 1981, a academia gracie saíu da Av. Rio Branco e sua nova sede foi estabelecida no clube Vasco da Gamma, na Lagoa. Em 1985 mudou de sede novamente e foi para o colégio Padre Antonio Vieira no Humaitá onde se encontra até hoje." _ Rolker Gracie

"O Jiu-Jitsu que criei foi para dar chance aos mais fracos enfrentarem os mais pesados e fortes. E fez tanto sucesso, que resolveram fazer um Jiu-Jitsu de competição. Gostaria de deixar claro que sou a favor da prática esportiva e da preparação técnica de qualquer atleta, seja qual for sua especialidade. Além de boa alimentação, controle sexual e da abstenção de hábitos prejudiciais à saude. O problema consiste na criação de um Jiu-Jitsu competitivo com regras, tempo inadequado e que privilegia os mais treinados, fortes e pesados. O objetivo do Jiu-Jitsu é, principalmente, benificiar os mais fracos, que não tendo dotes físicos são inferiorizados. O meu Jiu-Jitsu é uma arte de autodefesa que não aceita certos regulamentos e tempo determinado. Essas são as razões pelas quais não posso, com minha presença, apoiar espetáculos, cujo efeito retrata um anti Jiu-Jitsu."
Translation - English Jiu-jitsu stated many years ago, in India in the age of Buddha. The budist monks traveled a lot and were often robbed. To avoid this, they invented a form of self-defense and jiu-jitsu was born. Jiu-jitsu literally means “smooth art” and has 3 basic principles: the technique, the leverage and the base. After India, the art moved from China and later to Japan. In Japan, it made a large leap forward and became the form we know today and invented the kimono. From Japan it traveled to Brazil in 1914 courtesy of the fighter Mitsuyo Maeda.
The Gracies learned jiu-jitsu with Maeda and took it to Rio de Janeiro where they founded the first Brazilian academy of jiu-jitsu at Marques de Abrantes on Flamengo Street in 1925. It was there that the art of jiu-jitsu was perfected by the Gracie family. The Gracies were Carlos, Gastão, Helio and others. They always aggressively marketed the art of jiu-jitsu and demonstrated it efficiently in defiance of everyone. Helio Gracie, perfected jiu-jitsu in such a way that a small, thin person had the capability to fight against a stronger, heavier person. This established him as the father of Brazilian jiu-jitsu and from then on, the “Gracie Jiu-jitsu” has been victorious. Much later the Gracies founded the academy in the city center on 151 Rio Branco Street, 17th and 18th floors and from there the Gracie academy and the Gracies fought from the bottom up. In 1981, the Gracie academy left Rio Branco Street for their new establishment in the club Vasco da Gamma in Lagoa. “The jiu-jitsu that I created was to give those who are the most weak a chance to stand in front of those who are the most strong. It was so successful that they decided to make jiu-jitsu a competition. I would like to make clear that I am in favor of practicing the sport for technical preparation any athlete regardless of their specialty in addition to eating well, sexual control and abstinence from bad health habits. The problem with creating a competitive jiu-jitsu with rules is that it provides inadequate time and privileges the most trained and the strongest. The objective of jiu-jitsu principally, is to benefit the most weak who do not possess great physiques and are physically inferior. My jiu-jitsu is an art of self-defense that does not have set regulations and a determined timeframe. These are the reasons that I cannot be present at spectacles that are counter to the fundamentals of jiu-jitsu.”
