In January 2022, Thai government’s temporary suspension of the Test & Go scheme for new travelers after the spread of Omicron variant has affected the plan to reopen the country for international tourists. Many events were postponed due to the growing concerns about the outbreak of Covid-19.

Updates on Thailand’s MICE Organizers
- A number of event organizers postponed or put events on hold amid rising Covid-19 new cases. Thailand International Health Expo 2022, a major exhibition to demonstrate the efficiency and preparedness of Thailand’s medical and public health industry, postponed the event to 17-20 March 2022. Chinese New Year Festival on Yaowarat road on 1 February 2022 was cancelled by Samphanthawong District. It was called off for the second year in a row.
- Index Creative Village, Thailand’s leading event organizer, revealed that the company plan to organize events in response to the new driving trend focusing on the lifestyles of consumers who are fear of missing out (FOMO trend), covering tourism, sports, and food. Moreover, the events would provide spaces for attendees to take photos of the events and share (FOTO trend), creating awareness and increasing accessibility to the events.
Updates on Thailand’s MICE Exhibition Venues
- Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) has developed its retail space to the center of active lifestyles in Bangkok. With larger expansion, the QSNNC provides space for various zones, including food and beverage, event support service, and active lifestyles. Also, the QNNC aims to turn into ‘the Ultimate Inspiring World Class Events Platform for All,’ accommodating all types of events on both international and global scales with its five times larger space and attract over 13 million visitors a year.
- The 60th Anniversary of His Majesty the King’s Accession to the Throne international Convention Center (ICC Hat Yai) has announced that it is ready to offer all kinds of services under the preventative measures against Covid-19 from January 2020 onwards. Once having completed its mission as a field hospital between the end of April and the end of November 2021, the ICC Hat Yat sanitized and renovated the area, using the safety standard under 4 principles of disease control, including the 5 precautionary measures, DMHTT, from the department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health.
Updates on Thailand’s MICE Hotels
- Krabi Tourism Association has invited local hotels to register in the Hotel Isolation program to handle international tourists in the ‘green’ group, who test positive for Covid-19 with mild symptoms. This would reduce the number of hospital bed occupancy and provide convenience to travelers. Different from the hospitel, nurse practitioners are not standby at the hotel isolation but telephone check-up service is provided instead to reduce the cost, resulting the hotel isolation’s cheaper prices than the hospitel.
- Thai Hotels Association revealed Thailand’s average occupancy rate of hotels in January 2022 was 20%, close to the room occupancy rate in October 2021 because the government raised some preventive measures against the spread of Covid-19 Omicron variant. The government’s measures, for example the suspension of the Test & Go scheme for tourists and the extension of Work from Home period, affected the income of seminar venues in hotels.
- Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel responded to the wellness tourism trend with the new WELLeisureTM Hotel concept, combining relaxation with health care. Its strong point is on wellness and holistic health services – including healthcare, exercise, nutrition therapy, preventive healthcare and rehabilitation, which are accessible and available during vacations. The hotel aims to attract travelers who prioritize relaxation and health care.

- 4th Apple Co, a content creation company, partnered with RS Group launched Popcoin platform. Popcoin is not only cryptocurrency but also a huge community connecting various groups of people together. The coin can be used for marketing activities, joint activities between fans and artists, additional sources of income, and marketing solutions as the brand can use data on the platform to analyze consumer’s behaviors, and present products, services and marketing activities which matches consumers’ needs. Currently event companies partnered with Popcoin include Live Nation BEC-Tero Co - a world-class international concert organizer, High Cloud Entertainment, Siang Isan Molam Band, Full Sense - an influencer of eSport in Asia, etc.
Updates on Thailand’s MICE Cities
- TCEB is hosting the World Tea and Coffee Expo to raise Northern Thailand to be the center of the world’s production and trade for tea and coffee. The Expo will be organized in a hybrid form between 24-27 February 2022 at the Empress Convention Centre at the Empress Hotel in the heart of Chiang Mai. The Expo aims to enhance the readiness of value chain of tea and coffee industry in Northern Thailand as Chiang Mai is recognized as the center of high-quality coffee industry while Chiang Rai as a premium tea origin. It is expected that the two cities will be clearly branded as the destination of tea and coffee after the event.
