Chapter XXVI

Which talks about the pious works the Queen “donna” Leanor, sister of King “dom” Emanuel, did in these kingdoms; how through her intercession they brought the Relics of the virgin Sancta Auta body; and how the King had determined to reside in the kingdom of Algarve, to better support the war in Africa and the reason why he did not do it.

The Queen “donna” Leanor, wife of King “dom” Joam, second of the name and sister of the King “dom” Emmanuel, was a very virtuous and catholic Christian who used her wealth to help many of those that needed it, including the monasteries of friars and nuns who commonly called her ‘mother’, and supporting the poor.

She re-establish the Hospital das Caldas, in Obidos, giving a significant amount of money, borrowed from the kingdom finances, providing rich ornaments for the religious service, a substantial amount of bed linens and workers to help those who arrived there to be healed, rich or poor people. And for the poor, she designated a ration to last one month, which is the amount of time that the waters used to do their work.
This virtuous Catholic Queen established the Misericordia fraternity in this kingdom, being the regent on the times that the King “dom” Emanuel, her brother, went to Castella with the Princess Queen “donna” Isabel, his wife, to swear as a Prince and Princess of those Kingdoms. Dom Emanuel gave one “conto de reis” per year for the alms, for the maintenance of the orphans and five hundred thousand “reis” for other charity works.

In the Enxobregas valley, near Lisbon, the Queen Leonor re-establish a monastery for the invocation of Madre de Deus, populating it once more with Santa Clara nuns of the San Francisco Observancia Order, whose principles require them to always eat fish. There, she is buried in a shallow grave, flat at the same level as the ground, close to the dining hall.

Being so devoted to Saint Ursula, the guide and captain of the eleven thousand virtuous virgins martyrs, the Queen “donna” Leanor asked through her letters to the Emperor Maximiliano, her cousin as brother, if he could send to her some relics of those saint virgins, which he easily accorded. From all [relics] that were at the monastery of Saint Ursula, in the city of Colonia Agripina, where the virgins were buried, he chose the ones from the blessed Saint Auta, giving to the good guardianship of Francisco Pessoa, overseer of the King in Flandres, who was residing at villa Danuers, until he could send them to the Queen Leonor on a Dutch ship.
On the second day of September of one thousand five hundred and seventeen years the Dutch ship arrived in Lisbon, and on the twelfth day of the same month, the King “dom” Emanuel, at the time being there, gave an order to send those relics to the monastery of Madre de Deus, on the same ship they came, which was done with lots of festivity, several other ships and boats decorated with flags.

Since all the kingdom, at that time, was with pity for the Queen “donna” Maria, as the ship did not anchor in front of the monastery Madre de Deus, some of the Sé Canons went to the ship to bring the relics to the land, where the Queen “donna” Leanor and the Prince “dom” Joam, her nephew, were waiting. From the beach, the arc containing the relics traveled in solemn procession to the monastery, and was placed by “dom” Martinho da Costa, Archbishop of Lisbon, in an altar of the Church, that the Queen “donna” Leanor, ordered to build especially for this.

At that time, the King was having thoughts about following God. Far from the affairs of the world, and receiving advice from people who were aware of it, he decided to retire in the Algarve Kingdom. Supported by the revenue of that domain and the teachings of Christ, he would made that place a frontier for the war against the Moorish and would be able to provide the places he had in Africa with all that was necessary.

At the same time, the King “dom” Emanuel learned that his son, Prince “dom” Joam, was being persuaded by some of his friends to disobey him on some matters. And as a result he decided to change his plans and marry the Infanta “donna” Leanor, sister of the King “dom” Carlos de Castella, the one so many times before he had asked to marry his same son, the Prince. Which he has done, to make sure no bad advice would change his plans.
