Medhat Khalil, Raya Holding’s Chairman and CEO, discusses Raya’s current challenges and future investment and expansion plans.
Egypt is currently undergoing some serious and drastic changes; changes that have forced the private sector to undertake key strategic shifts in response to the economic and political turmoil.
No doubt, 2013 has been one of the toughest years for Raya Group’s operations. Businesses dealing with the government sector have been heavily affected, especially our IT line of business. The country’s unstable economic environment and security issues have had a major impact on our consumer electronics business, resulting in closing our retail outlets during chaotic times. This also affected our store expansion plans, forcing us to cancel our prospects of entering some promising markets such as Upper Egypt, Suez and Matrouh due to the diminished presence of security on roads and highways. In addition, gasoline price and its shortage have been factors that disturbed our operations and profitability.
On the positive side, some of our current investments were minimally impacted by the current economic crisis, such as Rameda, a pharmaceutical company that Raya owns a 29% stake of, and Fawry , a consumer-payment services provider, two of the few industries that were minimally impacted by the economic predicament.
As a leading investment conglomerate in Egypt and the Middle East, we are always a pioneer in penetrating new industries with a clear vision on the future and strategic direction to overcome these challenging days, starting with strictly monitoring our expenses while boosting the productivity of our resources, in order to maximize our shareholders’ return.
In the coming year, we are expanding our business in the regional market, with a special focus on Saudi Arabia and the GCC. In addition, we have eminent expansion plans into industries that are not easily affected by economic instabilities.
Strategically, we are expanding our business while entering into non-cyclical consumer services industry. We are currently evaluating prospects of franchise businesses to competitively step into the food and beverage market, a resilient and promising sector in Egypt.
We also have plans to establish a factory for our newly launched PET re-manufacturing line of business to be located in the Gulf region. Furthermore, we will launch a new contact center site in a European country that caters to our growing international customer base in Europe.
We are also pushing our boundaries beyond the traditional limits in the consumer electronics business. Our expansion plans include growing our consumer electronics’ maintenance operations in Nigeria and other promising countries. We are shifting our strategic direction in our retail business unit by launching new retail outlets that target a different segment of the market, while introducing the consumer installment payment option for B and C class. In addition, capitalizing on one of the largest distribution networks that exist in Egypt, we will introduce new products through our extensive consumer electronics distribution network.
Despite the turbulent economic environment, we are always up to the challenge. We strive to overcome the dares and to swiftly shift our gears to stay on top of the market. I would like to wholeheartedly thank our employees and our stakeholders who, during the rough times, were standing proudly, contributing with their efforts to always keep Raya’s position in the forefront. We are looking forward to a future that holds untapped opportunities for us to seize, always leading every market, no matter where we are, with a focused vision on the future.

مما لا شك فيه أن عام 2013 كان واحدًا من أصعب الأعوام التي مرت على مجموعة راية، فقد تأثرت الشركات التي تتعامل مع القطاع الحكومي بشدة، خاصةً تلك التي تعمل في مجال تكنولوجيا المعلومات، ومن الجدير بالذكر أن الحالة الاقتصادية غير المستقرة للدولة ومشكلات الأمن كان لها عظيم الأثر على مجال الإلكترونيات الاستهلاكية؛ مما تسبب في إغلاق منافذ بيع التجزئة خاصتنا أثناء أوقات الاضطرابات، وقد أثر ذلك أيضًا على خطط توسع وانتشار المتاجر الخاصة بنا، مما حملنا على إلغاء خططنا لدخول بعض الأسواق الواعدة مثل صعيد مصر، السويس، ومطروح نظرًا للتواجد الأمني الضعيف في الشوارع والطرق السريعة، ويضاف إلى ما سبق النقص في البنزين وارتفاع أسعاره واللذان كانا من العوامل التي أثرت سلبًا على عملياتنا وأرباحنا.
أما من الناحية الإيجابية، فقد تأثرت بعض استثماراتنا الحالية تأثرًا طفيفًا بفعل الأزمة الاقتصادية الراهنة، مثل راميدا - شركة للمستحضرات الطبية تمتلك راية 29% من أسهمها - وفوري - مزود لخدمات الدفع للمستهلكين - وهما من الصناعات القليلة التي أثرت عليها الأزمة الاقتصادية بشكل طفيف.
وبصفتنا المؤسسة الاستثمارية الرائدة في مصر والشرق الأوسط، تحتل شركتنا دومًا مركز الطليعة في تبني صناعات جديدة تصحبها رؤية واضحة للمستقبل والتوجه الإستراتيجي المطلوب لتجاوز هذه الأيام المليئة بالتحديات، بدءًا من رصد نفقاتنا بدقة أثناء رفع إنتاجية مواردنا، بغرض مضاعفة العائد الذي نقدمه لمساهمينا.

هذا وننتوي أيضًا إنشاء مصنع لخط أعمال إعادة تدوير البلاستيك الذي أطلقناه حديثًا في منطقة الخليج العربي، وعلاوة على ذلك، نخطط لافتتاح موقع جديد كمركز للاتصالات في إحدى الدول الأوروبية والذي يخدم قاعدة عملائنا المتزايدة في أوروبا.

• For replacing (substituting) the missing hormone in every form of an underactive thyroid gland
• For preventing renewed goitre formation (enlargement of the thyroid gland) after goitre operation when thyroid function is normal
• For the therapy of benign goitre when thyroid function is normal
• For the accompanying therapy of an overactive thyroid gland that is being treated with thyrostatics (medicines that inhibit an overactive thyroid gland), after the normal state of metabolism has been reached
• In a malignant tumour of the thyroid gland, mainly after surgery, for suppressing renewed tumour growth and supplementing missing thyroid hormone
• For examining the thyroid-gland function (thyroid suppression test)
2. Before you take Berlthyrox 100 µg
Do not take Berlthyrox 100 µg:
• If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to levothyroxine sodium or any of the other ingredients of Berlthyrox 100 µg
• If you have any of the following diseases or any of the stated conditions:
• An untreated overactive thyroid gland
• Untreated insufficiency of the adrenal cortex
• Untreated insufficiency of the pituitary gland if this results in insufficiency of the adrenal cortex that requires therapy
• A recent heart attack
• An acute inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis)
• An acute inflammation of all the wall layers of the heart (pancarditis)

• إذا كنت تعاني من أحد الأمراض التالية أو أي من الحالات المذكورة:
• زيادة نشاط الغدة الدرقية غير المُعالَج
• القصور غير المُعالج للقشرة الكظرية
• القصور غير المُعالج للغدة النخامية إذا نتج عنها قصور بالقشرة الكظرية مما يتطلب العلاج
• أزمة قلبية منذ وقت قريب
• التهاب حاد في عضلة القلب (التهاب العضلة القلبية)
• التهاب حاد لكل طبقات جدار القلب (التهاب القلب الشامل)
