Source text - English
Every day, local fishermen venture out into the rivers which feed the Mekong. The method of catching the shrimp is quite varied, homemade traps are laid the night before, and little morsels of rotting fish entice the shrimp into the baskets.
Men also trawl the calm waters with these large nets. But more impressive to me was this piece of local ingenuity, shrimp love the safety of shelter, the shrimp hide in these sticks and the fishermen simply shake them into the bowls. Genius.
As the fishermen return with their morning catch, only half the work has been done. Everybody has a role to play in the village, ladies cook the shrimp in these bit pots and then leave them to dry on bamboo mats. The dried shrimp is then sifted to get rid of all the excess shells. The village is so remote, access in the wet season is only by boat. All around me was nothing but shrimp. Children snack on it, people are boiling it up everywhere, it’s what sustains the local community in every facet of their lives.
