Kimonos embellished with magnolia leaves, lacy "transition garments" made of mulberry bark, brightly coloured "vegetal panes"...The visual artist Phet Cheng Suor immerses herself in her Sino Cambodian roots and her fascination with plants, leading us into her artistic universe vibrant with poetry, sensitivity and spirituality. Along the winding paths of the Botanical Gardens, Phet Cheng Suor found a wealth of seeds, medicinal plants and strange vegetation. Expertly treated and sometimes dyed, then put together, plants become works of art, sometimes flaunting a silk inlay, a name, a flower...After Osaka, Washington, Vienna and Paris, it is a great honour for the Botanical Gardens to have this internationally renowned artist exhibit her work from 15 May until 18 October 09.

Parallel to his autobiographical work, Scott Typaldos has also worked in fashion. In the interest of remembering the Jewish past, he made photo essays on the Natzwiller Struthof camp and on the 60th memorial service of the liberation of Auschwitz. He has been teaching photography in Brussels for two years.

This collection of photographs explores the interaction between the city of Lagos with its infrastructures - electricity pillars, bridges, harbours - and a community of people who live in the very centre of this metropolis, on and at the water's edge. The collection is part of a study I started five years ago and for which I have a local publishing contract.

The residents of Makoko hail from all corners of the coast. They speak different languages (Ijaw, Ajase, Delta, Delta-Igbo, Yoruba, Egun) and come from different states in Nigeria (Ondo, Delta, Bendel, Lagos-Badagry), as well as neighbouring countries such as Benin and Togo. Like everywhere in Africa, ethnic groups here transcend country borders. The Egun, for example, can be found in Benin, Nigeria and Togo, and make up at least 30% of the Makoko population.

Dutch to English: Isis --Short Story

Nu lig ik op mijn kamer. Alleen.
Alleen.
Waar was die lafaard? Net nu liet hij me alleen.

Now I'm in my room. Alone. They took Isis so that I'd be able to get some sleep, but I'm not succeeding. Thoughts are spinning and whirling around my head. I'm scared. I think of the child and of her father, who I haven't seen yet. Who's been out on a bender for the past three nights and will probably show up drunk again.
I'd begged him to be with me for the birth. I'd hoped he'd keep his promise, but he took off the night before. When the pain woke me, I saw that the space next to me was empty.
I ran through the house and called his name. Only the pain forced me to be calm. I curled up into a ball of misery and lay on the carpet for a while, not moving.
I tried to rouse myself. I'd have to go to the hospital soon. Alone.
Where was the coward? Of all the times to abandon me.
I called a couple of pubs, but couldn't find him anywhere.
I'd so hoped he would change his ways, what with the baby coming. I realised now what a naive and stupid thought that had been.

My heart is beating like something gone mad. I'm too tired to sleep. I call for the night nurse, and ask her for something to help me sleep.
'We're not allowed to give them out at four in the morning,' she says. 'It's pointless. The day starts at six.'
