Source text - Dutch Het doel van dit project is de verschillende gedaanten van de spanning tussen vrijheid en fatum in de werken uit de middelste periode van Nietzsche op te sporen en haar te verbinden met zijn cultuurfilosofie. Nietzsche creëert in zijn werken doelbewust een spanning tussen het bijzondere en het algemene. Dit komt bijvoorbeeld duidelijk tot uitdrukking in de gedachte van de eeuwige terugkeer: Nietzsche hanteert haar vooral als gedachte-experiment om een individuele reactie uit te lokken bij zijn lezer, maar tegelijk gaat van deze gedachte een kosmische wet uit. Zarathoestra’s ambivalente houding tegenover deze gedachte is nauw verbonden met haar conflictueus karakter.
Een dergelijke spanning is reeds aanwezig in Nietzsches eerste werk Die Geburt der Tragödie. Hier geeft Nietzsche het verschil aan tussen twee Griekse tragedies, Sophocles’ Oedipus en Aeschylus’ Prometheus. Oedipus, zo meent Nietzsche, wordt gekenmerkt door de passiviteit van de protagonist: uiteindelijk werd Oedipus tegen wil en dank door het lot gestuurd. Prometheus wordt volgens Nietzsche gekenmerkt door de activiteit van de Titaan Prometheus, die bewust rebelleerde tegen de Olympische goden en zo een nieuwe cultuur stichtte.
Nietzsche toont aan hoe het fenomeen transgressie op twee verschillende manieren in deze tragedies voorkomt. Enerzijds hebben we de held die bewust tegen de morele orde ingaat, anderzijds hebben we Oedipus die de morele wetten wil naleven, maar er zich juist hierdoor aan vergrijpt. Beide vormen van transgressie hebben betrekking op een culturele omwenteling, op het uitvaardigen van nieuwe wetten.
Aangezien dergelijke omwentelingen zich afspelen binnen de spanning tussen vrijheid en fatum, is een onderzoek naar deze spanning van belang om een beeld te krijgen van Nietzsches cultuurfilosofie. We moeten zijn schrijven over het ‘doel van de mens’ immers interpreteren in het licht van deze spanning, aangezien de notie van het doel bij hem verbonden is met een zekere noodzaak en onafwendbaarheid.
Het verschil in karakter tussen de twee eerder genoemde tragedies, is één van de hoofdthema’s van Nietzsches cultuurfilosofie en komt nog onder andere gedaanten voor in zijn werk. Doorheen het expliciteren van de verschillende vormen waarin dit thema voorkomt, stelt dit onderzoeksproject de vraag naar Nietzsches visie omtrent culturele ontwikkeling en vooruitgang. Een dergelijke vraag is onvermijdelijk verbonden met de vraag naar Nietzsches project voor de Westerse cultuur. Enerzijds zag hij zichzelf als een aeschyliaanse held die de toenmalige Westerse cultuur zou veranderen. Anderzijds vinden we passages waarin hij zichzelf als een ‘noodlot’ beschouwt.
Dit project wil onderzoeken wat deze spanning precies inhoudt, op welke manieren zij doorwerkt in Nietzsches teksten en welke implicaties zij heeft met betrekking tot zijn cultuurfilosofie. De onderzoeksvraag valt dus uiteen in drie delen: de herkomst van deze spanning, haar aanwezigheid in Nietzsches werk en haar implicaties voor zijn cultuurfilosofie.
Translation - English The goal of this project is to examine the different forms in which the tension between freedom and fate presents itself in Nietzsche’s middle works and to relate this tension to his cultural philosophy. Nietzsche purposely created a tension between the particular and the universal in all of his works. This kind of tension clearly presents itself in the thought of eternal recurrence: Nietzsche uses this thought primarily to evoke an individual reaction in his reader, but at the same time this thought proclaims a cosmic law. The struggle of the character Zarathustra with this thought, is related to its inherent conflict between individual freedom and cosmic fatality.
A similar tension is already present in Nietzsche’s first work The Birth of Tragedy. In this work Nietzsche gives an account of the difference between two Greek tragedies, Sophocles’ Oedipus and Aeschylus’ Prometheus. Nietzsche asserts that the main characteristic of Oedipus is the passiveness of the protagonist: Oedipus was involuntarily guided by fate all along. Prometheus’ main characteristic, according to Nietzsche, is the activity or force with which Prometheus rebells against the Olympic gods and thus founds a new culture in his rebellion.
In this comparison Nietzsche shows how the phenomenon of transgression occurs differently in both these tragedies. On the one hand there is the hero who willfully rebells against the existing moral order. On the other hand there is the law-abiding Oedipus who involuntarily breaks the moral laws. Both these forms of transgression are related to cultural revolution and cause the creation of new laws.
In this respect the tension between freedom and fate is very important in order to shed light on Nietzsche’s cultural philosophy. Since Nietzsche’s notion of ‘the goal of mankind’ is intertwined with a certain inevitability or ‘necessity’, his writing on cultural progress should be interpreted against the background of this tension.
The difference in character of both afore-mentioned tragedies is one of the main themes in Nietzsche’s cultural philosophy and presents itself under different forms throughout his work. Throughout the articulation of these different forms, this study aims to gain more insight in Nietzsche’s thoughts on cultural development and cultural progress. This in turn will help us gain a better picture of Nietzsche’s project for Western civilization. On the one hand Nietzsche projected himself as an Aeschylian hero who would change his contemporary Western culture. On the other hand we find fragments in which Nietzsche viewed himself as a ‘destiny’.
This project will research what exactly constitutes this tension, in which ways it is active within Nietzsche’s work and what its implications are on his cultural philosophy. So the research question is made up of the following three components: the tension’s pre-Socratic origin, its presence in Nietzsche’s work and its relation to his cultural philosophy.
