OVERBEMESTING

Over fertilisation

(1) Actually it is very simple: if we use non-degradable pesticides on the land and more fertiliser than the crop uses, the remainder will sink down and reach the not so deep and later on also the deep Groundwater. (2) If the land would not be fertilised more than the crop needs, further pollution of the Groundwater might be prevented. (3) The same applies to the rivers Rhine and Maas, each of which is a source of drinking water for 1/6th of the Dutch population.

(4) Because more waste is being dumped into the water of the river than it can process (“break down”), the water supply has too much to take out again to make the water drinkable. (5) And off course, non-degradable substances do not belong in a river at all. (6) This is why there is a battle for a clean Rhine and a cleaner Maas.

(7) So, over fertilisation is an evil that has to be stopped, just like improper use of pesticides. (8) For example, in the area in Drenthe where they grow factory potatoes an agent was used to keep the ground suitable for growing potatoes for years. (9) A non-degradable compartment of this ended up in the Groundwater. (10) Extra purification is now required to make the water suitable for drinking and this costs money.

(11) Or consider the incidents that we hear about regularly: trichloroethylene which is released during industrial processes, changing the motor oil without replacing the old oil, paint and old medicines that are being washed away into the sewers, instead of handing them over with the regular garbage in a concentrated form. (12) All of this is a problem to the water purification plants. (13) The consequence of this is that the price of drinking water will increase in the future. (14) The government shouldn’t hesitate for too long when it comes to taking measures.
