Source text - English Sugar industry and trade in Indonesia is always with the dynamics of vicissitudes. The producer and consumer are often haunted by fluctuation and intrigue. Sugar price is always fluctuated so the sweetener commodity business is often not as sweet as it taste.
Since 1995, national sugar production was decreasing from 2 million tons to only 1.4 million tons in the year 2000, so this business was not able to attract the investor interest. The degradation of sugar national industry was caused by the unstable price, therefore it weakened the enthusiasm of the farmers to grow sugar cane. The productivity of sugar cane areas was also shrinking and the efficiency of the processing factories was decreasing.
Translation - Indonesian Perjalanan industri dan perdagangan gula di Indonesia selama ini selalu diwarnai dinamika pasang-surut. Baik produsen maupun konsumen sering dihantui gejolak dan intrik. Harga gulapun selalu berfluktuasi sehingga bisnis komoditi pemanis ini sering tidak semanis rasanya.
Sejak tahun 1995, produksi gula nasional terus melorot dari 2 juta ton menjadi hanya 1,4 juta ton pada tahun 2000, sehingga bisnis ini sempat tidak menarik minat investor. Degradasi industri pergulaan nasional tersebut antara lain disebabkan harga yang tidak stabil sehingga melemahkan semangat petani untuk menanam tebu. Produktivitas lahan tebu juga terus menyusut dan efisiensi pabrik-pabrik pengolahannya terus menurun.
