current (partial) GPA (out of 5) vs. cumulative GPA (out of 20) Explanation: Universidad Metropolitana documentation clearly explains how the "promedio ponderado" is calculated: (a) For each course completed you multiply the grade (calificación) by the credit-value of the course (créditos). The result is the points (puntos) for that course. For example, if you get a grade of 13 for a course worth 3 credits, that gives you 39 points for that course. (b) You add up the total number of points for all courses completed. (c) You divide that total by the total credit-value, that is, the total number of credits for all courses complete. The result is the "promedio ponderado". The document that explains this explicitly says that the "promedio ponderado" is exactly the same thing as the "índice académico acumulado". Both are marks out of a maximum of 20. It's explained here: http://informacionestudiante.unimet.edu.ve/wp-content/upload... Well, what can we deduce from the figures we've got? 1. The "promedio ponderado", 17.94, is indeed the number of points (1552) divided by the number of credits (87). 2. This must be the cumulative weighted average for all courses taken to date. 87 credits represents several years of study. The maximum number of credits at this university for a whole degree is 180 for licenciado etc. and 115 for técnico superior universitario. The number of credits per term cannot exceed 15. So 87 credits is probably about 6 terms. See Article 8 here: http://www.unimet.edu.ve/unimetsite/wp-content/uploads/2013/... 3. The índice académico, 4.6, cannot be the índice académico acumulado, first because it's not out of 20, and second because it is not the scaled-down equivalent of the "promedio ponderado". 17.84/20 is equivalent to 4.46/5, not 4.6/5. 4. Therefore this is some other kind of índice académico, and the only kind it can be is the índice académico parcial, mentioned but not defined in some Universidad Metropolitana documents; for example: "Las asignaturas de ingles cursadas extracurricularmente se toman en consideración a los fines del cálculo del Índice Académico Acumulado y del Índice Académico Parcial" (Article 4) http://www.unimet.edu.ve/unimetsite/wp-content/uploads/2013/... I don't believe it's an unweighted cumulative average. I think "parcial" suggests that it's a weighted current average; in other words, 4.6/5 is the weighted average for the current term, or perhaps the current year, rather than the whole degree to date. This is obviously a guess, but it seems to me the only plausible conclusion. There are several ways you might express it, but I would use the terms "current" (perhaps adding "partial" in parentheses) and "cumulative", by analogy with current vs. cumulative GPA in the US: http://www.back2college.com/allthingsgpa.htm There is an element of doubt, so I would add a note to the client saying that this is what you think (if you agree) and asking for confirmation; or contact the Universidad Metropolitana. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs (2017-09-12 02:43:26 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Entiendo los problemas, Yvonne. |
