Come per la nobiltà più illuminata d’Europa, i Durazzo si dilettavano di rappresentazioni sceniche nei salotti delle loro residenze di città e in teatri all’aperto in villa, a Cornigliano ad esempio, dove anche Giacomo avrà occasione di recitare insieme agli zii e ai cugini. Propedeutica a tali attività era la traduzione di testi dal francese e l’adattamento delle pièces ai palcoscenici domestici, con un’attenzione alle novità, ai testi alla moda, ai best seller: l’esigenza di un continuo aggiornamento del proprio gusto sarà un concetto ben radicato nella mentalità del patrizio genovese. E per la sua generazione era ormai scontato come fosse soprattutto Parigi la fonte delle novità principali in fatto di letteratura, teatro, arti figurative, moda.
