German term

Verwaltungsebene

German to English Bus/Financial Government / Politics Verwaltung
I am translating a text about the Greek crisis. The article refers to cuts in the second austerity package which foresees among other things:

"eine Reduzierung der Verwaltungsebenen"

"Reduction in adminstrative levels" is what it means but is there a pithier way of saying that? Help as always, appreciated. The text is for a university term paper.

Discussion

Juliet Dawnay Jul 2, 2012:
For example you could remove or do away with excess bureaucracy and red tape, depending on the register. Whatever you choose, I would avoid nominalisation and use a verb.
Horst Huber (X) Jul 1, 2012:
Of course they meant "bureaucracy". But then, they did not say so. Yes, "layer" is a good word here, whereas "Schichten" would be unusual. And cutting out excess layers is not an unusual demand.
philgoddard Jul 1, 2012:
That was my first thought - why not put it as an answer?
Wolf Draeger Jul 1, 2012:
Agree with meirs Maybe try "to streamline the(ir) bureaucracy".
meirs Jun 30, 2012:
They probably refer to bureaucracy using Verwaltung as an euphemism for it. Moreover, I would translate Ebene here as "layer" rather than level.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Not pithy after all, buthere is what I decided to write (and thanks too to Andres Larson for pointing to "hierarchy") "a reduction in the number of levels of administrative hierarchy." My thanks to everyone."

don´t understand why you find fault with this term.

because, as is generally known, the Greek administrative apparatus or bureaucratic machinery is overly bloated and will thus be subjected to a reduction of some of its levels
Peer comment(s):

agree Horst Huber (X) : Richtig. Die Begriffsruppe selbst ist aus dem Englischen ins Deutsche gekommen. "Reduzierung" ist genau "reduction", Deutsch hätte man "Verringerung" gesagt. Und schon Theodor Heuß spottete, "Die Manager gedeihen, besonders auf der Bundesebene."
