Definition:
Ekoton je granična oblast između dva susedna ekosistema. Edafski i klimatski faktori koji delom uslovljavaju karakter ekosistema, mogu uslovljavati i oblik ekotona koji se javlja između njih. Iako granice mogu postojati i kao nagle promene u ekološkim karakteristikama, najčešće su to zone postepenog prelaza, u kojima postoje preklapanja i zalaženja karakteristika jednog ekosistema u drugi. Ovo može značiti da ekoton poseduje veći broj vrsta i gušće populacije u odnosu na one prisutne u susednim ekosistemima. Mogu biti prisutne i vrste koje ne postoje u susednim ekosistemima. Tendencija ekotona da poseduje i sopstvene karakteristike naziva se efekat ivice (engl. edge effect).
