Mein Übersetzungsvorschläg wäre dieser:

Auch wenn ein Training in diesem Bereich oft als heikel angesehen wird, wofür man viel Fingerspitzengefühl haben sollte, sind eine gewisse Aufgeschlossenheit und ein gewisses Verständnis für eine fremde Kultur viel wert, wo ein regelmäßiger Kontakt mit den Einheimischen eines fremden Landes erforderlich ist. Das "wo" gefällt mir nicht im Deutschen, probably the "where" is used like "wherever"..."woimmer"

agree  Thomas Pfann: War mir erst bei dem "sentimental" nicht so sicher, aber ich glaub, das passt doch ganz gut. Das "wird gerne als ... Firlefanz abgetan" find ich jedenfalls äußerst treffend! ;-)
