Reference: Empowerment & Recovery in Mental Illness Reference information: Your question should come from the Powerpoint presentation charts on "Empowerment & Recovery in Mental Illness" by Presenters: Horst Peters. Program Coordinator,. Partnership for Consumer Empowerment Empowerment is an issue of social justice and refers to the process that people go through to gain or regain the power and control over their own lives that is necessary for dignity and self-determination. It requires that people have access to the means and opportunity to assume responsibility for their own lives and well-being. The person most likely to get well – to become empowered –... It is the job of mental health services to provide an environment of personal respect, material support, and social justice that encourages the individual person in this process. That is, when a person is empowered, he/she should be given control over his/her treatment and life and be provided with an environment that is conducive to self-determination, self-autonomy, self-choice, etc. It is not simply self-esteem, self-respect, self-determination, and self-control. It is more equvalent to the concept of "patient-centered therapy" or "client-centered therapy". -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day21 hrs (2013-05-17 08:07:41 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Your presentation charts should adopt Judi Chamberlin's definition for "empowerment". |
