Italian term

media pianura

Italian to English Science Geography
I know "bassa pianura" can be translated as "lowland", however "midland" doesn't seem right for "media pianura", as midland means the middle of the country, where as media pianura is for a plain that is not as low as quite near/below sea level - but still low enough to be a plain. The sentence is "Attila è un personaggio chiave della mitologia storica della bassa e media pianura friulana".

Any ideas much appreciated :)
Proposed translations (English)
3 +1 middle plain
4 foothills

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Thanks everyone for your contributions. The jury's still out - I may go for "middle plain" but not absolutely convinced it's right.

trovo anche tradotto con "central plain" in quanto si trova tra "low" e "high/er"

neutral philgoddard : Middle refers to location, not altitude, in my opinion. And central is definitely wrong.

Pianura doesn't just mean plain: it can also mean of relatively low altitude. In other words, it doesn't have to be flat.

pianura
noun
lowlands [noun plural] land which is low compared with other, higher land.
plain [noun] a large flat level piece of land

If you look at the map, Friuli has a coastal plain, then foothills, and then the Dolomites.

neutral martini : sarebbe "area/zona pedemontana" in IT; la pianura media e quella bassa sono lontane dalle colline
