explain how the world works / figure it all out
I heard the second expression used once in connection to Jean Paul Sartre, 'the little wall-eyed man who had figured it all out'. In intellectual juxtaposition with the breadth and grandiosity of his claims, it was the perfect putdown. In this context it would have to be used with the more direct translation, 'explain how the world works'. so the reader knows what it refers to.
