French term
découpage cantonal
French to English
Social Sciences
Government / Politics
regional administrative divisions
I'm having problems with the above phrase taken from the text below. I was going to translate this as "division of constituencies" but can't seem to find any reference sources to back this up. Any suggestions welcomed. Tx in advance :)
Le découpage cantonal de la région
descriptif:
Préfectures, limites cantonales, préfecture de région, préfectures de départements, cantons

way the cantons/districts are divided up or the marking of canton/district boundaries
if there's not a more concise way. I think it may be best to keep canton since district is an approximative translation.
just a couple of ideas.

: Keep the word "canton". "Boundaries" is good too.

: I'd go for "marking the new canton boundaries" (I don't know whether "remarking" exists in E, but that's the idea

: yes, keep "canton", and best to avoid references to "electoral" or "constituency" as suggested below as that's not necessarily the point - or the case

: it seems wikipedia is incorrect when it calls a canton "a subdivision of an arrondissement" since an arrondissement is the most basic element of a large city - (BTW: this link is more appropriate than your previous now-hidden "communal divisions")

: "préfectures"= ville capitale du département - "arrondissements" divisent seulement des villes comme Paris, Marseille, Lyon, ne peuvent être sous-divisés en cantons - le Département est lui divisé en cantons=unités administratives et pas juste électorales
