put in exergue, place in exergue Explanation: Heidegger in "Being and Time" put a quotation of the Platonician Sophist at the very beginning of the book. Exergues are usually placed up on the right of the page in smaller print. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 39 mins (2003-08-27 20:01:08 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I forgot to talk about the metaphorical meaning. The exergue sets a mood, a tonem, so by placing the Sophist\'s quotation in exergue, Heidegger prepares the reader for unsettling questions. (This is not a translation but an explanation.) |
