of someone's personal recollections of the 1970s in Germany, I would imagine that "cultural equivalence" here is irrelevant. Particularly if the illustrations include Pril flower stickers...
However, I agree with Fairy Liquid being the legendary UK equivalent and well remember sticky-backed plastic. And don't forget "double-sided sticky tape for speed"!!

the leading brand of washing up liquid in the UK in the 1970s was Fairy Liquid later advertised by Nanette Newman. AFAIK "Pril" was never sold in the UK.

The question here is whether you primarily need cultural equivalence. For those of us who grew up in the UK in the 70s - at least for regular viewers of the children's programme Blue Peter - it seemed that everything was being made and decorated with "sticky-back plastic" (as it was the BBC brand names were not allowed) and certainly in many homes of that era, shelves and cupboard doors were often redecorated with "sticky-back plastic" - I think the brand name was Fablon.

Your text has another German cultural reference that of "privat TV". In the UK we had commercial television from the late 1950s with ITV which was going strong in the 70s with its many game shows, light entertainment and of course Britain's longest running TV soap: Coronation Street.

I have to admit that my family considered them rather tacky and would never ever have used them. Where they ever used in the UK? Do they need any explanation?
