Wer Schussapparate, die von der Behörde eines Staates zugelassen sind, mit dem die gegenseitige Anerkennung der Prüfzeichen vereinbart ist, einführt, darf diese nur unter Beifügung einer von der Physikalisch-Technischen Bundesanstalt inhaltlich gebilligten Betriebsanleitung in deutscher Sprache anderen überlassen. Der Physikalisch-Technischen Bundesanstalt ist zur Prüfung der Betriebsanleitung auch ein zugelassener, serienmäßig gefertigter Schussapparat zur Verfügung zu stellen. § 11 Abs. 2 Nr. 4 und Abs. 4 gelten entsprechend.

While this site refers to horses, I am pretty sure the same term is used for the device used on beef cattle etc., in slaughterhouses.

Thanks - from the context and usage in a range of German texts it would appear to be something like a "captive bolt gun" as cited in the Australian Firearms (General) Regulation 1997, Part I, Sect. 4 (i.e. a device propelling a bolt-like projectile) BUT it could be used here in a more general sense of simply a device firing something.

agree  Frosty: Yup, I`ll go along with that. A Schusswaffe is basically anything that releases a projectile by the use of explosives. Even the so-called "Claymore" was technically a `Schusswaffe", not a mine!

  -> Thanks Frosty: the only 'Claymore' I'm familiar with is the one you drink, though it probably has a similar effect if you down enough of it...
