Relatively strong winds that are concentrated in a narrow band in the atmosphere. Jet Streams are usually thousands of kilometers long, hundreds of kilometers wide but only a few kilometers thick. They are usually found between 6 and 10 miles above the surface.

是指大气中一股强而窄的气流带。急流的水平长度达上万公里，宽数百公里，厚几公里。急流中心的长轴称为急流轴，它近于水平分布。急流中心最大风速在对流层的上部必须大于或等于30米/秒，它的风速水平切变量级为每100公里5米/秒，垂直量级为每公里5?10米/秒。按急流出现的高度不同，一般可分为高空急流和低空急流。

相對強風之集中，在大氣層內一狹窄之氣流。此名詞可用於任何此種氣流，不論其風向為何 (包括垂直方向), 但現正逐漸將此一名詞專指中緯度西風帶內近似水平最大風速之噴射氣流, 且集中於對流層之上部。噴射氣流之維持問題為理論氣象學之重要問題。此種噴射氣流有時可劃分為兩類：主要之一種稱為「極鋒噴射氣流」(Polar-front jetstream) 與中緯度及中高緯度之極鋒相偕，甚為散漫，可延展環繞整個半球，但亦如極鋒，並不連續，逐日之變動極大。另在緯度20至30度間某些經度發現「副熱帶噴射氣流」(Subtropical jet stream), 而以亞洲海岸外圍最強。現分析高空圖時，凡確實決定風速等於或超過50浬/ 時之處即示有噴射氣流。
