Secondo me l'espressione è sarcastica, per via dell'antitesi fra broadsheet= quotidano di formato tradizionale e serio e "tabloid" = quotidiano formato tabloid, pieno di pettegolezzi e scandali, come d'altronde giustamente suggerito dai colleghi che hanno risposto in precedenza.
Qui l'espressione "broadsheet tabloid story" potrebbe sarcasticamente essere intesa come "pretentious story" = un romanzo pretenzioso ma di nessun valore, o un feulleton da quattro soldi che sarebbe meglio pubblicare su un tabloid. Comunque dovresti trovare un'espressione un tantino ironica/sarcasticam forse sulla falsariga di "romanzo da Liala in incognito" (che sarebbe meglio pubblicare su un tabloid)
Se si trattasse di uno sceneggiato, tenteri con un'espressione del tipo " più che uno sceneggiato è uno scemeggiato da tabloid".

... as normally in English you have tabloids OR broadsheets...
tabloids or 'red tops' as I think they get called in the States are the popular rags full of showbiz gossip, sex etc.. that don't use words of more than two syllables... e.g. the Sun or the Mirror in the UK
broadsheets - so called as they are 'broader' in size than the tabloids (which are normally A3 size), are the serious newspapers e.g. the Guardian, the Times in the UK
so what is meant by a broadsheet tabloid story I am really not sure...

: Dan, you stole my first thought. This reads like outside cover let's-quote-the-reviews-we-got type language. Since tabloids don't exist as such in Italy.

just a suggestion. I was trying to think of an appropriate way to capture the concept of broadsheet using a similar TV program analogy. Hope this puts you on the right track.
