La pediatría, por definición, abarca desde el nacimiento hasta la pubertad. Por lo tanto, en esta frase no es necesario hacer la distinción entre lactantes y niños, pues el término es inclusivo.

: "Pediátrico" significa "perteneciente y relativo la pediatría", y no a los niños o la infancia (infantiles). Considero pertinente evitar en el lenguaje escrito estas transposiciones de adjetivos, calcada del inglés y muy frecuente entre los médicos.

Y "pediatría" es la "Rama de la medicina que se ocupa de la salud y enfermedades de los niños" (RAE) y "pediátrico" es un adjetivo aceptado por la RAE. Por lo tanto, su uso es correcto en este contexto.

: En el lenguaje médico no se habla de "bebé", sino de "lactante". Además, como explico en mi proposición de traducción, pienso que en este caso no hace falta forzar una distinción, que en inglés, en cambio, es ineludible.

Pienso que en esta frase, basta con decir "niños" (en contraposición a "adultos"), puesto que esta palabra engloba a los lactantes ('infants') y a los niños más grandes ('childs'). En efecto, la niñez es el período de la vida que se extiende desde el nacimiento hasta la pubertad.
En inglés, en cambio, se distingue claramente entre 'infant/infancy' y 'child/childhood'. No hace falta forzar esta distinción en castellano cuando no es necesario, como en este caso.

According to what i have seen in the literature the cutoff ages for "neonate", "newborn", "infant", and "child" vary greatly according to the author and/ or medical institution. The adjective "pediatric" is used very loosely to refer to any of these age groups. Perhaps in another part of the text you are translating, you can find the definition of each (in terms of age), according to the entity that sponsors the study.

Coincido con María Claudia en que en español sólo se dice niños, niñez, o infancia, y en este caso se diferencia en primera o segunda infancia, aunque los límites de edad varían según las distintas publicaciones. Por lo tanto yo usaría o "infancia" o "pediátricos" en este contexto.
