See more Maybe because of age Maybe because many interests are raising in this period (seems a contraddiction but it isn't) but translation is a job to me. The attitude has changed in time. When I was 25 it was more a mission than a job. Today I am experiencing more possibilities of mixing translation with other expressive means. And I can "see" other than that. Pros and cons of digitalization and networking, perhaps. Proz has contributed to change my attitudes, for example. ▲ Collapse

To further define "art", I turned to wikipedia: "Though art's definition is disputed and has changed over time, general descriptions mention an idea of human agency and creation through imaginative or technical skill." So, on that basis, let's say I consider translation an art as well as part of my job. It's simply what I do. Unfortunately, the notion of translation as an "industry" or "business" or even a "tool" seems to be increasingly accepted as a given. ▲ Collapse

I echo Julian's comments regarding translation as a mere job, but there are times when I agree with all the other options. Depends on what and for whom I'm translating and under what terms and conditions. I have certainly experienced boredom and nightmare, as well as art and a sense of mission.

to me translating is a pleasure when I convey the meaning of what is written in a foreign language to my native one so that natives can read and benefit from it is something like helping giving birth a new NATIVE TEXT

Most of the answers make me feel a black sheep, an old unsatisfied translator but I am not! After all my job (profession, yes, it is better) is my passion. No doubts.
