The smooth efficiency of the French reflexive was never more apparent, and the verb itself, one of Mallarmé favorites, eventually seemed best translated through its definition, "se réduire à néant": "dissappears into nothingness", until that came to seem too abrupt, then: "passes into nothingness." "Une dentelle s'abolit" expresses the central movement of the poem from positive to negative, doubt to assertion and back again, the impotence of the artist asserted in te poem whose very existence refutes it.
