Information collection

"Information collection" es el levantamiento de información que antes no existía, a partir de sus fuentes originales.

"Information retrieval" es la "recuperación" de información ya levantada que ya existe en una bases de datos, etc. y por lo tanto no es aplicable.

neutral stashhound : Collection usually refers to something that is a physical object; Information is more of an idea. The translation "information collection" is understandable to a native speaker, but sounds a bit odd.

Gather information/ research

Though nothing is wrong with information collection, it sounds stiff and foreign to a native english speaker. I suggest gather information if your attempting to keep it fairly close to the spanish; or research if you just want it to sound right.
