Description:21st-century communication models are changing the way people interact and do business. These changes are affecting interpreters and translators as well. From remote participation to virtual meetings and from real-time translation of chat and email, the lines are blurring between translation and interpreting. Currently, interpreters find themselves being asked to use new technologies and to deliver translation services for real-time written communications more suited for professional translators. How will our sister professions respond to this new market demand? What business and training models are emerging to support them? How can we advocate for quality and appropriate working conditions? This session will give you a big picture view of new work models taking shape in the expanding language services industry and how those changes are impacting the individual translator and interpreter.

Speakers:Katherine Allen
Katharine Allen is co-President of InterpretAmerica, an organization dedicated to raising the profile of the interpreting industry, which hosts the annual InterpretAmerica Summit. She also trains interpreters and interpreter trainers, and provides curriculum design and review for academic and licensed training programs. Clients have included Kaiser Permanente, the Department of Defense, Glendon College of Translation and the Monterey Institute of International Studies. She is a published author, including co-authorship of the newly published The Community Interpreter (R): An International Textbook. Katharine is a frequent public speaker at conferences nationwide. Katharine also provides language access consulting services to hospitals. She is an active interpreter and translator for state and local governments, health services, and courts. Katharine holds a Master’s Degree in Translation and Interpretation (MATI) from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.
Barry Slaughter Olsen
Barry Slaughter Olsen, co-president of InterpretAmerica, is an assistant professor of translation and interpretation at the Monterey Institute’s (MIIS) Graduate School of Translation, interpretation and Language Education. A working conference interpreter and translator since 1993, Barry has taught numerous simultaneous and consecutive interpretation and training of trainers courses in the United States, Latin America and Europe. He is a member of the Training Committee of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC, and General Manager of Multilingual at http://ZipDX.com, a company providing next-generation teleconferencing services, including simultaneous interpretation of teleconferences and webinars. He holds an M.A. in Conference Interpretation MIIS.
