Source text - English If we ask what religion had to do with food in antiquity, the answer is threefold. First, the religious festivals shaped the year of the community. Festivals also marked the life-cycle of the individual,
with the appropriate feasts to mark birth and integration, marriage and death. Calendars survive from the Greek and the Roman worlds . Many festivals and smaller rituals entailed (among other things) the offering of animals or other foods to the gods, a number of whom were responsible for the success or not of the flocks and the harvests. At those festivals, human beings often ate with the gods, and enjoyed a special meal. Second, the religious festivals were linked with the power and social structures of the community and reinforced the social order. Third, eating in a religious context was often considered 'tradi- tional'. Sometimes such ancient rites were in need of explanation, giving rise to a branch of literature that consisted of answers given to questions a reader might ask. We shall see examples in Ovid and Plutarch. Religion's roots in the past did not preclude new gods and new rituals to meet change over time.
I begin this chapter in the modern Mediterranean world, with a scene which illustrates how society organizes itself around religious markers. Such markers were likely to have been more prominent in the ancient world.
Translation - Arabic إذا سألنا عن علاقة الدين بالطعام في العصر القديم، نجد أن الإجابة لها ثلاثة جوانب. أولًا: كانت الأعياد الدينية تشكل العام لدى الجماعة. وكانت الأعياد أيضًا تميز مراحل دورة حياة الفرد بعلامات، وذلك بالولائم التي تقام بمناسبة الميلاد والدمج في المجتمع والزواج والوفاة. وظلت المناسبات المهمة باقية من البلدان التي تأثرت بالحضارتين الإغريقية والرومانية. وكانت الكثير من الأعياد وكذلك الشعائر ذات النطاق الأصغر تتطلب (من بين أشياء أخرى) تقديم الحيوانات أو غيرها من الأطعمة باعتبارها قرابين إلى الآلهة، وكان عدد من تلك الآلهة مسؤولة عن ازدهار قطعان الماشية ومواسم الحصاد أو فشلها. وفي تلك الأعياد، كان الناس كثيرًا ما يأكلون مع الآلهة ويتمتعون بمأدبة مميزة. ثانيًا: كانت الأعياد الدينية ترتبط بقوة المجتمع والبنى الاجتماعية للمجتمع وكانت تعزز من النظام الاجتماعي. ثالثًا: كان تناول الطعام في إطار ديني غالبًا ما يُنظر إليه على أنه من العادات «المتوارثة التقليدية». وأحيانًا كانت مثل تلك الطقوس القديمة تتطلب تفسيرًا، مما أدى لنشوء فرع من الأدب يتميز بتقديم إجابات على أسئلة قد يطرحها قارئ ما. وسنرى أمثلة على ذلك في أعمال أوفيد وبلوتارخ. ولم تؤدِ جذور الدين في الماضي إلى استبعاد الآلهة الجديدة والشعائر الجديدة لمواكبة التغير الذي يطرأ على مر الزمن.

English to Arabic: Two Swans Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English ‘I was assaulted,’ Mrs Cunliffe – or Robin Ellacott, as she had been two hours ago – had said. The photographer was a squeamish man. He had fought off the mental image of steel slicing into that soft, pale flesh. Thankfully, the ugly mark was now hidden in the shadow cast by Mrs Cunliffe’s bouquet of creamy roses. The swans, the damned swans. If both would clear out of the background it wouldn’t matter, but one of them was repeatedly diving, its fluffy pyramid of a backside jutting out of the middle of the lake like a feathered iceberg, its contortions ruffling the surface of the water so that its digital removal would be far more complicated than young Mr Cunliffe, who had already suggested this remedy, realised. The swan’s mate, meanwhile, continued to lurk over by the bank: graceful, serene and determinedly out of shot.
Translation - Arabic قالت السيدة كانليف، أو روبين إلاكوت، كما كان اسمها منذ ساعتين:
"لقد تعرضتُ لحادث طعن بسكين."
كان المصور الفوتوغرافي رجلًا شديد الحساسية، إذ حاول صرف تفكيره عن صورة رآها بعين ذهنه لسكين من الصلب تطعن ذلك اللحم الطري الشاحب. ولحسن الحظ أن الندبة القبيحة صارت محجوبة الآن في ظل باقة الورود ذات اللون العاجي التي كانت تحملها السيدة كانليف.
ياللبجعتان، تلك اللعينتان. إذا ابتعدت كلاهما عن خلفية المشهد، لما كان للأمر أهمية، ولكن إحداهما كانت تغطس مرارًا، فيصعد ظهرها الأزغب الشبيه بالهرم من وسط البحيرة وكأنه قمة جبل جليدي من الريش، وكانت حركاتها المختلجة تلك تجعل سطح المياه يضطرب ويتموج، حتى أصبحت مهمة إزالة البجعة رقميًا من الصورة أكثر تعقيدًا بكثير مما كان يتصور السيد كانليف، صاحب هذا الاقتراح. أما البجعة الأخرى، فظلت تسبح بهدوء بجوار الضفة في رشاقة وسكون، بعيدًا عن كادر اللقطة، وكأنها تتعمد ذلك.
