INTRODUCTION
British Council is proud to launch “Talking Art” paintings exhibition in partnership with the General Commission of Tourism and Antiquities and the National Museum in Riyadh on 5th February 2012.
Talking Art is part of the New Work New Audiences Arts Programme* that aims to introduce contemporary British artwork to the Middle East,

TALKING ARTS EXHIBITION
“This precious stone set in the silver sea.” (Shakespeare, Richard II
The United Kingdom is a collection of islands in North Europe, buffeted by the surrounding seas which shape its coastline and bring the precipitations that grey the city and green the land.
This exhibition, drawn from the Collection of the British Council, explores how artists have responded to, and drawn inspiration from this ‘precious stone’
The exhibition is divided into two sections:
1- The Coast and The Country
The first part begins with the work of Sir Matthew Smith, A winding road- Cornish landscape (1920). Smith had lived and worked in France.
This section also includes the work of the St Ives artists, a group of painters, sculptors and potters.
Also included are works by Paul Nash of the prehistoric landscape of the West of England, the woods of Sussex in the autumn painted by Ivon Hitchens, together with views of the shoreline in Scotland as drawn by Eric Ravilious in wartime, the Essex coast seen by John Nash, the rugged and rocky coast of Wales by Sutherland and, finally, the White Cliffs of Dover in the star shaped painting by Jeffrey Camp.
This section is augmented by photographs by Bill Brandt, Fay Godwin and Raymond Moore
2- The Town and The City
The Town and The City, begins with the installation Pre-Retroscope V (River Lea Journey 2008) by Conrad Shawcross charting a journey down the river by rowing boat….
The depiction of the city starts in Edwardian London with a painting by Frederick Gore
The inner city is seen through William Coldstream’s View from a Window in Hampstead, the roads around Frank Auerbach’s Camden Theatre and in View of Dalston Junction by Leon Kossoff.
The exhibition takes the viewer out of London to Bath: The Aqueduct at Bath, painted by Ginner, that formed part of the canal system linking the south to the industrial cities of the north. These industrial cities are shown in the work of L S Lowry ; the smoke belching chimneys of the Black Country by Edward Wadsworth and the anonymous hinterland of industrial parks in the Midlands in David Rayson’s work.
Again the section is complemented by photographs by John Davies and Paul Barkshire,

ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS DURING THE EXHIBITION:
a- Catalogue
A catalogue will accompany the show and would serve a dual purpose:
- A bi-lingual promotional/presentation item that describes and illustrates the exhibition
- A source of visual reference material to support the exhibition’s education programme.
Catalogue Design is a high-quality folder or wallet consisting of a brochure, featuring an essay on the British Council Collection and the exhibition written by a leading UK curator/critic, and a series of colour, large-format postcards illustrating some of the key works in the exhibition.
Target Audience: VIP (Ministries, Head of Arts’ Association, CEO of private companies, stakeholders or partners of BC etc…) Visitors of the exhibition, Head of Schools…
b- Virtual Exhibition
An on-line display of the exhibition allowing people to make virtual tour of the exhibition remotely.
In addition, short artist films will be uploaded as well as downloadable education notes and a digital, audio exhibition guide.
Digital Activities
- Downloadable audio exhibition guide hosting the audio files on the Collection exhibition site, also on a platform such as I-tunes so that individuals can download on to their mobiles phones or MP3 players
- Series of short artist films online, all subtitled in Arabic
- Downloadable education pack*
- Film workshop groups in action will be filmed and uploaded on to the Collection exhibition site as well as record individual responses to the show.
- Short digital presentation reflecting the creative spirit of the project. This work would combine sound, text and examples of artwork produce within the competition (See activity D below)).

c- Workshops
Two workshops will run in parallel to each other:
- Workshop 1- led by a UK artist working with local artists and children on making artworks on a theme of landscape and involving a digital film/audio component
- Workshop 2- led by an Arts educationalist from the UK and aimed at teachers exploring ideas and strategies for presenting their own art classes and projects. This workshop would be designed for cascade training.
Target Audience: Private Schools
1,500 students and over 10 teachers are expected to benefit from these workshops
d- Competition
Competition element would be discussed with the Saudi Team and presented in a later stage.
We need to think about how we exploit the literary Britain theme that is now strengthened within the exhibition selection. Should we think about a poetry/ creative writing aspect to the competition that responds to a theme of landscape?
Who will be competing? Children or everyone? We may need to exclude this al together at this stage as we are not clear how it is going to work.
The other option is to include section d – Competition here and say: - Optional/Additional activity.
MEDIA COVERAGE
Wide promotional campaign will be distributed through local print media, radio, TV and British Council related websites (Social networking platforms such as blogs/facebook)

Conclusion
With the British Council’s “Talking Art” exhibition, you will have a singular platform to access all Saudi residents; other Arab nationals and the international communities living in Saudi Arabia.
Based on previous years’ experience (similar exhibitions at the National Museum) we expect to reach over 500 people every night, with audiences rising to over 750 at the weekend.

Exhibition’s Description
“This precious stone set in the silver sea.”

The United Kingdom is a collection of islands in North Europe, buffeted by the surrounding seas which shape its coastline and bring the precipitations that grey the city and green the land.
This exhibition, drawn from the Collection of the British Council, explores how artists have responded to, and drawn inspiration from this ‘precious stone’.
The exhibition is divided into two sections: The Coast and The Country and The Town and The City.
The Coast and The Country
The first part begins with the work of Sir Matthew Smith, A winding road- Cornish landscape (1920). Smith had lived and worked in France and brought home with him the use of the bright clear colours used by the French Fauve painters to describe the landscape. This section also includes the work of the St Ives artists, a group of painters, sculptors and potters who settled in the far south west of England and who found inspiration in the ancient wind battered landscape behind and around the town, and in the spray and spume of the Atlantic Ocean. Also included are works by Paul Nash of the prehistoric landscape of the West of England, the woods of Sussex in the autumn painted by Ivon Hitchens, together with views of the shoreline in Scotland as drawn by Eric Ravilious in wartime, the Essex coast seen by John Nash, the rugged and rocky coast of Wales by Sutherland and, finally, the White Cliffs of Dover in the star shaped painting by Jeffrey Camp.
This section is augmented by photographs by Bill Brandt, considered one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. The works are drawn from a series entitled Literary Britain: a group of landscape photographs inspired by writers such as the Bronte sisters, Richard Jeffries and Rudyard Kipling. Also included are photographs by Fay Godwin from Remains of Elmet, a collaboration with the poet Ted Hughes, which explores the landscape in and around the Calder Valley in Yorkshire once home of the industrial revolution with its spinning mills, factories and mines. The final sequence of photographs by Raymond Moore takes us back to the coast - to Cumbria, Alderney and Wales.
Pinpointing this section are sculptures by Nicholas Pope and David Nash literally hewn from the wood and Spring Circle by Richard Long, a Turner prize winner, comprising slabs of Delabole slate from Cornwall.
The Town and The City
The second section: The Town and The City, begins with the installation Pre-Retroscope V (River Lea Journey 2008) by Conrad Shawcross charting a journey down the river by rowing boat, passing by parts of the old and regenerated East End, past the Olympic Stadium and out into the countryside. The depiction of the city starts in Edwardian London with a painting by Frederick Gore of the underground station at Mornington Crescent (1913), barely changed in the intervening years despite war, the latter is alluded to in Lord Methuen’s romantic painting of Primrose Hill by Night. The inner city is seen through William Coldstream’s View from a Window in Hampstead, the roads around Frank Auerbach’s Camden Theatre and in View of Dalston Junction by Leon Kossoff. The show then moves out to the edges of city; the suburban houses and gardens of David Hepher and Victor Pasmore, and the social housing painted by Humphrey Ocean. The exhibition takes the viewer out of London to Bath: The Aqueduct at Bath, painted by Ginner, that formed part of the canal system linking the south to the industrial cities of the north. These industrial cities are shown in the work of L S Lowry who depicted the busy, bustling life in Salford; the smoke belching chimneys of the Black Country by Edward Wadsworth and the anonymous hinterland of industrial parks in the Midlands in David Rayson’s work.
Again the section is complemented by photographs: views of the Manchester ship canal in Accrington and the railway viaduct at Stockport – completed in 1840 and once the largest such structure in the world - by John Davies. A set of views of the bridges of London by Paul Barkshire, taken at the break of day before the city awakes, completes the section.
Why the British Council does it
We are at an exciting point for the arts in the Middle East.
Countries in the region are beginning to invest more funds in arts infrastructure, venues and events. Arts professionals are searching for new platforms for their programmes and at the same time looking for opportunities to network with their peers overseas and showcase their work internationally.
There is also a significant untapped young audience in this region who have never visited an exhibition or a theatre but who regularly look to digital media for inspiration. They are interested in the culture of the region but also artistic inspiration from overseas. As one of the world leaders in the creative industries, the UK is of great interest to this region’s arts professionals.

المملكة المتحدة هي مجموعة من الجزر في شمال اوروبا ، محاطة بالبحار التي تشكل خط الساحل وتعطي ايحاءات بلون رمادي على المدينة وتعطي لونا اخضر لليابسة ، وهذا المعرض ، من ضمن مجموعة القنصلية البريطانية ، يستكشف كيف استجاب الفنانون واستوحو الهامهم من هذا " الحجر الثمين "
ينقسم هذا المعرض الى قسمين
1- الساحل والريف
يبدأ الجزء الأول بعمل السيد / ماثيو سميث ، لوحة على طريق الكورنيش وقت هبوب الرياح ( 1920 ) . لقد عاش سميث وعمل في فرنسا .
ويشمل هذا القسم ايضا عمل فناني سانت ايفيس ، وهم مجموعة من الرسامين والنحاتين وفناني الأواني الفخارية .
ويشمل ايضا اعمال بول ناش بلوحات ما قبل التاريخ في غرب انجلترا والغابات في ساسكس في فصل الخريف والتي رسمها ايفون هيتشنز ، مع مناظر لخط الشاطئ في اسكتلندا حسب رسمها ايريك رافليوس في وقت الحرب ، وساحل ايسكس حسب رؤيته من قبل جون ناش والساحل الصخري لويلز بواسطة سوذرلاند ، واخيرا " صخور دوفر البيضاء " في لوحة على شكل نجم بواسطة جيفري كامب .
هذا القسم به صور فوتغرافية بواسطة بل براندت و فاي جود وين وريموند مور .
2- البلدة والمدينة
البلدة والمدينة ، تبدأ بتركيب ما يسبق ريتروسكوب على شكل حرف V
( رحلة ريفر لي 2008 ) بواسطة كونراد شوكروس يرسم رحلة بوسط النهر بقارب تجديف .
يبدأ تصوير المدينة في ادوارديان لندن بلوحة ليفريدريك جور حيث يمكن رؤية المدينة من الداخل من خلال لوحة ويليام كولدسترين " منظر من النافذة في هامبستيد ، والطرق حول مسرح فرانك اورباك كامدين ومنظر من دالستون جانكشن بواسطة ليون كوسوف . يأخذ المعرض الزائر خارج لندن الى خارج باث : الممر المائي في باث ، لوحة بواسطة جينار ، والتي شكلت جزء من نظام القناة التي تربط الجنوب بالمدن الصناعية في الشمال وتظهر هذه المدن الصناعية في أعمال ال . اس لوري ؛ حيث المداخن التي تبث دخان أسود في الريف بواسطة ادوارد واد سويرث والمنتزهات الصناعية في وسط الأراضي في عمل ديفيد ريسون .

يتوقع ان يزور هذا المعرض اكثر من 10.000 شخص على اساس تجارب سابقة لأحداث مماثلة بالمتحف الوطني بالرياض .

أ- كتالوج
سيصحب العرض كتالوج ويخدم غرضين :
- عنصر ترويجي / تحضيري بلغتين يصف ويوضح المعرض بالصور .
- مصدر لمادة مرجعية مرئية لدعم البرنامج التعليمي بالمعرض
تصميم الكتالوج
- هو عبارة عن فولدر عالي الجودة او محفظة تتكون من بروشور ، يوضح مقال حول مجموعة القنصلية البريطانية والمعرض مكتوب بواسطة ناقد من الرواد في المملكة المتحدة وسلسلة من الألوان وكروت بريدية في صيغة كبيرة توضح بالصور بعضا من الأعمال الأساسية في المعرض .
الجمهور المقصود
: كبار الشخصيات ( الوزراء والرؤساء و جمعية الفنون والمدراء التنفيذيين للشركات الخاصة وشركاء القنصلية البريطانية .. الخ ) وزوار المعرض و مدراء المدارس ...
ب- المعرض الافتراضي
عرض للمعرض على الشبكة العنكبوتية يسمح للناس بجولة افتراضية للمعرض عن بعد . وأيضا سيتم تحميل افلام فنية قصيرة وكذلك ملاحظات تعليمية قابلة للتحميل ودليل سمعي رقمي للمعرض .
أنشطة رقمية
- دليل سمعي للمعرض يمكن تحميله يستضيف الملفات السمعية حول موقع مجموعة المعرض وأيضا على المواقع مثل آي تيونز وحيث يمكن للأفراد تحميله على هواتفهم المحمولة او على مشغلات ام بي 3
- سلسلة من الأفلام الفنية القصيرة اون لاين ، وكلها بعناوين فرعية باللغة العربية .
- مجموعة تعليمية يمكن تحميلها
- مجموعات ورش عمل للأفلام الحالية سيتم تصويرها وتحميلها على موقع مجموعة المعرض وكذلك تسجيل استجابات وردود الأفراد للعرض .
- عروض تقديمية رقمية قصيرة تعكس الروح الابداعية للمشروع وهذا العمل يجمع بين الصوت والنص وأمثلة من انتاج الأعمال الفنية في إطار المسابقة (انظر النشاط ( د .) أدناه )
ج- ورش عمل
سيتم إدارة وتشغيل ورشتين عمل متوازيتان :
- ورشة عمل رقم 1 – يقودها فنان من المملكة المتحدة يعمل مع فنانين محليين وأطفال في صناعة أعمال فنية حول فكرة منظر طبيعي ويشمل فيلم رقمي / عنصر صوتي .
- ورشة عمل 2 – يقودها معلم فنون من المملكة المتحدة وهدفها معلمين يستكشفون الافكار والاستراتيجيات لتحضير حصص ومشروعات فنية خاصة بهم وسيتم تخصيص هذه الورشة للتدريب المنظم
الجمهور المقصود : مدارس أهلية
يتوقع أن يستفيد من هذه الورش 1.500 من الطلاب وأكثر من 10 معلمين .
د- المسابقة
يتم مناقشة عنصر المسابقة مع الفريق السعودي ويتم تحضيرها وتقديمها في مرحلة لاحقة .
نحن بحاجة لأن نفكر في كيفية استغلال الفكرة الأدبية البريطانية التي يتم تعزيزها الآن ضمن اختيار المعرض- وهل ينبغي أن نفكر في كتابة شعرية ابداعية للمسابقة والتي تتجاوب مع فكرة المنظر الطبيعي ؟ من سيتنافس ؟ الأطفال أو الجميع ؟ ربما نحتاج الى استبعاد هذا تماما في هذه المرحلة لأننا ليس لدينا رؤية واضحة لكيفية سير هذا العمل .
وهناك اختيار آخر هو ان نشمل القسم ( د ) – مسابقة هنا ونقول : اختياري / نشاط اضافي .

سيتم توزيع حملة ترويجية كبيرة من خلال وسائل الاعلام المحلية المطبوعة والراديو والتليفزيون والمواقع الالكترونية للقنصلية البريطانية ( الشبكات الاجتماعية مثل المدونات / والفيس بوك )

الخاتمة

لماذا تفعل القنصلية البريطانية هذا ؟
نحن في نقطة مثيرة للفنون في الشرق الأوسط والدول في منطقة بدأت في استثمار اموال اكثر في البنية الأساسية للفنون والمعارض والأحداث ويبحث محترفوا الفنون عن اماكن جديدة لبرامجهم وفي نفس الوقت يبحثون عن فرص للتواصل مع أقانهم في الخارج ويعرضوا اعمالهم على العالم .
وهناك أيضا جمهور من الشباب في هذه المنطقة ومنهم من لم يقم ابدا بزيارة معرض او مسرح ولكن يتطلع الى الاعلام الرقمي للإلهام وهم يهتمون بثقافة المنطقة ولكن أيضا الإلهام الفني من الخارج وباعتبارها إحدى رواد العالم في الصناعات الابداعية ، فإن المملكة المتحدة مثار اهتمام كبير لمحترفي الفن في هذه المنطقة .
رؤية القنصلية البريطانية
نعتقد بأنه في التأثير التحويلي للفنون للتغلب على الحدود الثقافية وبالقيام بدور العامل المساعد لتطوير التفاهم والثقة والحوار الدولي فنحن نهدف الى ما يلي :
• شراكة طويلة الأجل بالتعامل الثقافي والفني .
• تقديم فرص أعمال شبكة وتوسيع الروابط العالمية للفنانين المروجين في الشرق الأوسط لتمكين تدفق الأعمال مع المملكة المتحدة في كلا الاتجاهين .
• ترويج معرفة أوسع وجمهور عالمي للفنون المعاصرة .
• تحفيز الابتكار والابداع .
• ابتكار فرص تطويرية للفنانين دعم القدرة على التطوير في البنية الأساسية المحلية للفنون .
• الوصول الى جمهور جديد للفنون وخصوصا بين الشباب .
نحن نعمل مع هيئات رائدة في الشرق الأوط تشمل متاحف ومسارح ووزارات حكومية أيضا وعبر مدة البرنامج نهدف للوصول الى 100 من محترفي الفنون والفنانين وجذب جمهور مباشرة أكثر من 10.000 وأيضا أكثر من 250.000 فرد سيشاهدون الأحداث عبر التلفزيون والراديو والانترنت

فيلم الامارات تحضير مجموعة من الافلام من المملكة المتحدة مرتبطة بالدراما والرقص والموسيقى وأنشطة فنية مرئية تقييم الأعمال الابداعية عالية الجودة ويشاهد الشباب فن بريطاني وأشكال أخرى من الفن
رقص الامارات تقديم رقص متنوع معاصر من المملكة المتحدة يحضر الشباب عرض . ويطور طلاب الرقص الشرق الأوسط قدراتهم على الأداء
موسيقى البحرين والامارات ترويجالتعاون الموسيقي وتحضير عرض أفضل جاز بريطاني ويتعاون الموسيقيون من الشرق الأوسط والبريطانيون في أداء روائع شعبية معاصرة في المملكة المتحدة والشرق الاوسط . ويحضر الشباب أداء مسرحي .

INTRODUCTION
British Council is proud to launch “Talking Art” paintings exhibition in partnership with the General Commission of Tourism and Antiquities and the National Museum in Riyadh on 5th February 2012.
Talking Art is part of the New Work New Audiences Arts Programme* that aims to introduce contemporary British artwork to the Middle East,

TALKING ARTS EXHIBITION
“This precious stone set in the silver sea.” (Shakespeare, Richard II
The United Kingdom is a collection of islands in North Europe, buffeted by the surrounding seas which shape its coastline and bring the precipitations that grey the city and green the land.
This exhibition, drawn from the Collection of the British Council, explores how artists have responded to, and drawn inspiration from this ‘precious stone’
The exhibition is divided into two sections:
1- The Coast and The Country
The first part begins with the work of Sir Matthew Smith, A winding road- Cornish landscape (1920). Smith had lived and worked in France.
This section also includes the work of the St Ives artists, a group of painters, sculptors and potters.
Also included are works by Paul Nash of the prehistoric landscape of the West of England, the woods of Sussex in the autumn painted by Ivon Hitchens, together with views of the shoreline in Scotland as drawn by Eric Ravilious in wartime, the Essex coast seen by John Nash, the rugged and rocky coast of Wales by Sutherland and, finally, the White Cliffs of Dover in the star shaped painting by Jeffrey Camp.
This section is augmented by photographs by Bill Brandt, Fay Godwin and Raymond Moore
2- The Town and The City
The Town and The City, begins with the installation Pre-Retroscope V (River Lea Journey 2008) by Conrad Shawcross charting a journey down the river by rowing boat….
The depiction of the city starts in Edwardian London with a painting by Frederick Gore
The inner city is seen through William Coldstream’s View from a Window in Hampstead, the roads around Frank Auerbach’s Camden Theatre and in View of Dalston Junction by Leon Kossoff.
The exhibition takes the viewer out of London to Bath: The Aqueduct at Bath, painted by Ginner, that formed part of the canal system linking the south to the industrial cities of the north. These industrial cities are shown in the work of L S Lowry ; the smoke belching chimneys of the Black Country by Edward Wadsworth and the anonymous hinterland of industrial parks in the Midlands in David Rayson’s work.
Again the section is complemented by photographs by John Davies and Paul Barkshire,

ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS DURING THE EXHIBITION:
a- Catalogue
A catalogue will accompany the show and would serve a dual purpose:
- A bi-lingual promotional/presentation item that describes and illustrates the exhibition
- A source of visual reference material to support the exhibition’s education programme.
Catalogue Design is a high-quality folder or wallet consisting of a brochure, featuring an essay on the British Council Collection and the exhibition written by a leading UK curator/critic, and a series of colour, large-format postcards illustrating some of the key works in the exhibition.
Target Audience: VIP (Ministries, Head of Arts’ Association, CEO of private companies, stakeholders or partners of BC etc…) Visitors of the exhibition, Head of Schools…
b- Virtual Exhibition
An on-line display of the exhibition allowing people to make virtual tour of the exhibition remotely.
In addition, short artist films will be uploaded as well as downloadable education notes and a digital, audio exhibition guide.
Digital Activities
- Downloadable audio exhibition guide hosting the audio files on the Collection exhibition site, also on a platform such as I-tunes so that individuals can download on to their mobiles phones or MP3 players
- Series of short artist films online, all subtitled in Arabic
- Downloadable education pack*
- Film workshop groups in action will be filmed and uploaded on to the Collection exhibition site as well as record individual responses to the show.
- Short digital presentation reflecting the creative spirit of the project. This work would combine sound, text and examples of artwork produce within the competition (See activity D below)).

c- Workshops
Two workshops will run in parallel to each other:
- Workshop 1- led by a UK artist working with local artists and children on making artworks on a theme of landscape and involving a digital film/audio component
- Workshop 2- led by an Arts educationalist from the UK and aimed at teachers exploring ideas and strategies for presenting their own art classes and projects. This workshop would be designed for cascade training.
Target Audience: Private Schools
1,500 students and over 10 teachers are expected to benefit from these workshops
d- Competition
Competition element would be discussed with the Saudi Team and presented in a later stage.
We need to think about how we exploit the literary Britain theme that is now strengthened within the exhibition selection. Should we think about a poetry/ creative writing aspect to the competition that responds to a theme of landscape?
Who will be competing? Children or everyone? We may need to exclude this al together at this stage as we are not clear how it is going to work.
The other option is to include section d – Competition here and say: - Optional/Additional activity.
MEDIA COVERAGE
Wide promotional campaign will be distributed through local print media, radio, TV and British Council related websites (Social networking platforms such as blogs/facebook)

The United Kingdom is a collection of islands in North Europe, buffeted by the surrounding seas which shape its coastline and bring the precipitations that grey the city and green the land.
This exhibition, drawn from the Collection of the British Council, explores how artists have responded to, and drawn inspiration from this ‘precious stone’.

The Coast and The Country
The first part begins with the work of Sir Matthew Smith, A winding road- Cornish landscape (1920). Smith had lived and worked in France and brought home with him the use of the bright clear colours used by the French Fauve painters to describe the landscape. This section also includes the work of the St Ives artists, a group of painters, sculptors and potters who settled in the far south west of England and who found inspiration in the ancient wind battered landscape behind and around the town, and in the spray and spume of the Atlantic Ocean. Also included are works by Paul Nash of the prehistoric landscape of the West of England, the woods of Sussex in the autumn painted by Ivon Hitchens, together with views of the shoreline in Scotland as drawn by Eric Ravilious in wartime, the Essex coast seen by John Nash, the rugged and rocky coast of Wales by Sutherland and, finally, the White Cliffs of Dover in the star shaped painting by Jeffrey Camp.
This section is augmented by photographs by Bill Brandt, considered one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. The works are drawn from a series entitled Literary Britain: a group of landscape photographs inspired by writers such as the Bronte sisters, Richard Jeffries and Rudyard Kipling. Also included are photographs by Fay Godwin from Remains of Elmet, a collaboration with the poet Ted Hughes, which explores the landscape in and around the Calder Valley in Yorkshire once home of the industrial revolution with its spinning mills, factories and mines. The final sequence of photographs by Raymond Moore takes us back to the coast - to Cumbria, Alderney and Wales.
Pinpointing this section are sculptures by Nicholas Pope and David Nash literally hewn from the wood and Spring Circle by Richard Long, a Turner prize winner, comprising slabs of Delabole slate from Cornwall.
The Town and The City
The second section: The Town and The City, begins with the installation Pre-Retroscope V (River Lea Journey 2008) by Conrad Shawcross charting a journey down the river by rowing boat, passing by parts of the old and regenerated East End, past the Olympic Stadium and out into the countryside. The depiction of the city starts in Edwardian London with a painting by Frederick Gore of the underground station at Mornington Crescent (1913), barely changed in the intervening years despite war, the latter is alluded to in Lord Methuen’s romantic painting of Primrose Hill by Night. The inner city is seen through William Coldstream’s View from a Window in Hampstead, the roads around Frank Auerbach’s Camden Theatre and in View of Dalston Junction by Leon Kossoff. The show then moves out to the edges of city; the suburban houses and gardens of David Hepher and Victor Pasmore, and the social housing painted by Humphrey Ocean. The exhibition takes the viewer out of London to Bath: The Aqueduct at Bath, painted by Ginner, that formed part of the canal system linking the south to the industrial cities of the north. These industrial cities are shown in the work of L S Lowry who depicted the busy, bustling life in Salford; the smoke belching chimneys of the Black Country by Edward Wadsworth and the anonymous hinterland of industrial parks in the Midlands in David Rayson’s work.
Again the section is complemented by photographs: views of the Manchester ship canal in Accrington and the railway viaduct at Stockport – completed in 1840 and once the largest such structure in the world - by John Davies. A set of views of the bridges of London by Paul Barkshire, taken at the break of day before the city awakes, completes the section.
Why the British Council does it
We are at an exciting point for the arts in the Middle East.
Countries in the region are beginning to invest more funds in arts infrastructure, venues and events. Arts professionals are searching for new platforms for their programmes and at the same time looking for opportunities to network with their peers overseas and showcase their work internationally.
There is also a significant untapped young audience in this region who have never visited an exhibition or a theatre but who regularly look to digital media for inspiration. They are interested in the culture of the region but also artistic inspiration from overseas. As one of the world leaders in the creative industries, the UK is of great interest to this region’s arts professionals.
British Council Vision
We believe in the transformational effect of the arts to overcome cultural barriers and act as a catalyst for developing international understanding, trust and dialogue. We aim to
• foster long-term partnerships for cultural and artistic collaboration
• provide networking opportunities and expand international links for artists and promoters in the Middle East, to enable the two-way flow of work with the UK;

We work with leading institutions throughout the Middle East including museums and theatres as well as government ministries. Over the length of the Programme we aim to reach over 100 arts professionals and artists and attract a live audience of over 10,000. A further 250,000 more people will experience our events through TV, radio and online content.
Funding enables us to run a range of activities from international cultural and artistic collaborations including literature festivals, visual arts exhibitions, and performances of contemporary music, theatre and dance.

This year, British Council celebrated its 37 anniversary in Saudi Arabia. Our activity is delivered from 3 centres in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar
We actively engage with the Saudi community and the authorities and, through our innovative programmes, are able to bring people together from the Saudi and the UK to benefit from the bridge of cultural relations and educational opportunities that span the two countries. This ‘bridge’ is built on mutual trust developed through valued partnerships, many of which have been designed in response to the evolving needs of the UAE.
The funding returns’ figures from last financial year prove the strong and successful partnerships we have with the major local players in the cultural scene in Saudi Arabia.

مقدمة
تفخر القنصلية البريطانية بتدشين معرض لوحات " حديث الفن " بالاشتراك مع الهيئة العامة للسياحة والآثار والمتحف الوطني بالرياض في 5 فبراير 2012 . يعتبر معرض حديث الفن جزء من برنامج فنون لعمل جديد لجمهور جديد والذي يهدف الى تقديم الأعمال الفنية البريطانية المعاصرة الى الشرق الأوسط ، ولكي نجعل هذا الحدث أكثر أهمية ولتوصيله الى جمهور أكبر فإننا نود دعوتكم الى الاشتراك معنا في رعاية هذا المعرض .

معرض حديث الفن
" لقد اختفى هذا الحجر الثمين في البحر الفضي " ( شكسبير ، ريتشارد الثاني )
المملكة المتحدة هي مجموعة من الجزر في شمال اوروبا ، محاطة بالبحار التي تشكل خط الساحل وتعطي ايحاءات بلون رمادي على المدينة وتعطي لونا اخضر لليابسة ، وهذا المعرض ، من ضمن مجموعة القنصلية البريطانية ، يستكشف كيف استجاب الفنانون واستوحو الهامهم من هذا " الحجر الثمين "
ينقسم هذا المعرض الى قسمين
1- الساحل والريف
يبدأ الجزء الأول بعمل السيد / ماثيو سميث ، لوحة على طريق الكورنيش وقت هبوب الرياح ( 1920 ) . لقد عاش سميث وعمل في فرنسا .
ويشمل هذا القسم ايضا عمل فناني سانت ايفيس ، وهم مجموعة من الرسامين والنحاتين وفناني الأواني الفخارية .
ويشمل ايضا اعمال بول ناش بلوحات ما قبل التاريخ في غرب انجلترا والغابات في ساسكس في فصل الخريف والتي رسمها ايفون هيتشنز ، مع مناظر لخط الشاطئ في اسكتلندا حسب رسمها ايريك رافليوس في وقت الحرب ، وساحل ايسكس حسب رؤيته من قبل جون ناش والساحل الصخري لويلز بواسطة سوذرلاند ، واخيرا " صخور دوفر البيضاء " في لوحة على شكل نجم بواسطة جيفري كامب .
هذا القسم به صور فوتغرافية بواسطة بل براندت و فاي جود وين وريموند مور .
2- البلدة والمدينة
البلدة والمدينة ، تبدأ بتركيب ما يسبق ريتروسكوب على شكل حرف V
( رحلة ريفر لي 2008 ) بواسطة كونراد شوكروس يرسم رحلة بوسط النهر بقارب تجديف .
يبدأ تصوير المدينة في ادوارديان لندن بلوحة ليفريدريك جور حيث يمكن رؤية المدينة من الداخل من خلال لوحة ويليام كولدسترين " منظر من النافذة في هامبستيد ، والطرق حول مسرح فرانك اورباك كامدين ومنظر من دالستون جانكشن بواسطة ليون كوسوف . يأخذ المعرض الزائر خارج لندن الى خارج باث : الممر المائي في باث ، لوحة بواسطة جينار ، والتي شكلت جزء من نظام القناة التي تربط الجنوب بالمدن الصناعية في الشمال وتظهر هذه المدن الصناعية في أعمال ال . اس لوري ؛ حيث المداخن التي تبث دخان أسود في الريف بواسطة ادوارد واد سويرث والمنتزهات الصناعية في وسط الأراضي في عمل ديفيد ريسون .

يتوقع ان يزور هذا المعرض اكثر من 10.000 شخص على اساس تجارب سابقة لأحداث مماثلة بالمتحف الوطني بالرياض .
أنشطة وأحداث خلال المعرض :
أ- كتالوج
سيصحب العرض كتالوج ويخدم غرضين :
- عنصر ترويجي / تحضيري بلغتين يصف ويوضح المعرض بالصور .
- مصدر لمادة مرجعية مرئية لدعم البرنامج التعليمي بالمعرض
تصميم الكتالوج
- هو عبارة عن فولدر عالي الجودة او محفظة تتكون من بروشور ، يوضح مقال حول مجموعة القنصلية البريطانية والمعرض مكتوب بواسطة ناقد من الرواد في المملكة المتحدة وسلسلة من الألوان وكروت بريدية في صيغة كبيرة توضح بالصور بعضا من الأعمال الأساسية في المعرض .
الجمهور المقصود
: كبار الشخصيات ( الوزراء والرؤساء و جمعية الفنون والمدراء التنفيذيين للشركات الخاصة وشركاء القنصلية البريطانية .. الخ ) وزوار المعرض و مدراء المدارس ...
ب- المعرض الافتراضي
عرض للمعرض على الشبكة العنكبوتية يسمح للناس بجولة افتراضية للمعرض عن بعد . وأيضا سيتم تحميل افلام فنية قصيرة وكذلك ملاحظات تعليمية قابلة للتحميل ودليل سمعي رقمي للمعرض .
أنشطة رقمية
- دليل سمعي للمعرض يمكن تحميله يستضيف الملفات السمعية حول موقع مجموعة المعرض وأيضا على المواقع مثل آي تيونز وحيث يمكن للأفراد تحميله على هواتفهم المحمولة او على مشغلات ام بي 3
- سلسلة من الأفلام الفنية القصيرة اون لاين ، وكلها بعناوين فرعية باللغة العربية .
- مجموعة تعليمية يمكن تحميلها
- مجموعات ورش عمل للأفلام الحالية سيتم تصويرها وتحميلها على موقع مجموعة المعرض وكذلك تسجيل استجابات وردود الأفراد للعرض .
- عروض تقديمية رقمية قصيرة تعكس الروح الابداعية للمشروع وهذا العمل يجمع بين الصوت والنص وأمثلة من انتاج الأعمال الفنية في إطار المسابقة (انظر النشاط ( د .) أدناه )
ج- ورش عمل
سيتم إدارة وتشغيل ورشتين عمل متوازيتان :
- ورشة عمل رقم 1 – يقودها فنان من المملكة المتحدة يعمل مع فنانين محليين وأطفال في صناعة أعمال فنية حول فكرة منظر طبيعي ويشمل فيلم رقمي / عنصر صوتي .
- ورشة عمل 2 – يقودها معلم فنون من المملكة المتحدة وهدفها معلمين يستكشفون الافكار والاستراتيجيات لتحضير حصص ومشروعات فنية خاصة بهم وسيتم تخصيص هذه الورشة للتدريب المنظم
الجمهور المقصود : مدارس أهلية
يتوقع أن يستفيد من هذه الورش 1.500 من الطلاب وأكثر من 10 معلمين .
د- المسابقة
يتم مناقشة عنصر المسابقة مع الفريق السعودي ويتم تحضيرها وتقديمها في مرحلة لاحقة .
نحن بحاجة لأن نفكر في كيفية استغلال الفكرة الأدبية البريطانية التي يتم تعزيزها الآن ضمن اختيار المعرض- وهل ينبغي أن نفكر في كتابة شعرية ابداعية للمسابقة والتي تتجاوب مع فكرة المنظر الطبيعي ؟ من سيتنافس ؟ الأطفال أو الجميع ؟ ربما نحتاج الى استبعاد هذا تماما في هذه المرحلة لأننا ليس لدينا رؤية واضحة لكيفية سير هذا العمل .
وهناك اختيار آخر هو ان نشمل القسم ( د ) – مسابقة هنا ونقول : اختياري / نشاط اضافي .

ويشمل هذا القسم ايضا عمل فنانين سانت ايفيس ، وهم مجموعة من الرسامين والنحاتين وفناني الأواني الفخارية .
ويشمل ايضا اعمال بول ناش بلوحات ما قبل التاريخ في غرب انجلترا والغابات في ساسكس في فصل الخريف والتي رسمها ايفون هيتشنز ، مع مناظر لخط الشاطئ في اسكتلاندا حسب رسمها بواسطة ايريك رافليوس في وقت الحرب ، وساحل ايسكس حسب رؤيته من قبل جون ناش والساحل الصخري لويلز بواسطة سوذرلاند ، واخيرا " صخور دوفر البيضاء " في لوحة على شكل نجم بواسطة جيفري كامب .
هذا القسم به صور فيتوغرافية بواسطة بل براندت ، الذي يعتبر واحد من أعظم المصورين الفيتوغرافيين في القرن العشرين ويشمل أيضا صور فوتوغرافية بواسطة جود وين مت " بقايا إلمَهْ وأي مجموعة مشتركة مع الشاعر تد هيو الذي يستكشف المنظر الطبيعي في وحول وادي كالديف في يوركشاير التي كانت مكانا للثورة الصناعية بطواحينها ومصانعها ومناجمها . والسلسلة الأخيرة من الصور الفوتوغرافية بواسطة ريموند مور تعود بنا الى الساحل – الى كمبريا و آلديمي وويلز .
نيكولاس بوب وديفيد ناش هم النحاتون في هذا القسم من الغابات و دائرة الربيع بواسطة ريتشرد لونج هو احد الفائزين بجائزة تومر .
البلدة والمدينة
البلدة والمدينة ، تبدأ بتركيب ما يسبق ريتروسكوب على شكل حرف V
( رحلة ريفر لي 2008 ) بواسطة كونراد شوكروس يرسم رحلة بوسط النهر بقارب تجديف .
يبدأ تصوير المدينة في ادوارديان لندن بلوحة ليفريدريك جور يمكن رؤية داخل المدينة من خلال لوحة ويليام كولدسترين " منظر من النافذة في هامبستيد ، والطرق حول مسرح فرانك اورباك كامدين ومنظر من دالستون جانك شن بواسطة ليون كوسوف . يأخذ المعرض الزائر خارج لندن الى خارج باث : الممر المائي في باث ، لوحة بواسطة جينار ، والتي شكلت جزء من نظام القناه التي تربط الجنوب بالمدن الصناعية في الشمال وتظهر هذه المدن الصناعية في اعمال ال . اس لوري ؛ حيث المداخن في الريف الاسود بواسطة ادوارد واد سويرث والمنزهات الصناعية في وسط الأراضي في عمل ديفيد ريسون .

لماذا تفعل القنصلية البريطانية هذا ؟
نحن في نقطة مثيرة للفنون في الشرق الأوسط والدول في منطقة بدأت في استثمار اموال اكثر في البنية الأساسية للفنون والمعارض والأحداث ويبحث محترفوا الفنون عن اماكن جديدة لبرامجهم وفي نفس الوقت يبحثون عن فرص للتواصل مع أقانهم في الخارج ويعرضوا اعمالهم على العالم .
وهناك أيضا جمهور من الشباب في هذه المنطقة ومنهم من لم يقم ابدا بزيارة معرض او مسرح ولكن يتطلع الى الاعلام الرقمي للإلهام وهم يهتمون بثقافة المنطقة ولكن أيضا الإلهام الفني من الخارج وباعتبارها إحدى رواد العالم في الصناعات الابداعية ، فإن المملكة المتحدة مثار اهتمام كبير لمحترفي الفن في هذه المنطقة .

أهمية المعرض:
يشكل أكبر حدث تجاري متخصص، وأهم منصة لتواصل والتقاء العاملين في قطاع الحماية والأمن بأهم العملاء الباحثين عن وسائل الحماية في المملكة التي تعد أكبر سوق في الشرق الأوسط.
كما يعد أول معرض متخصص في أنظمة الحماية، والحلول الأمنية يقام على أرض المملكة، حيث جاء بعد رصد توجه الحكومة،والقطاع الخاص، ورجال الأعمال نحو تطبيق وسائل وطرق الحماية المتطورة، واعتماد أجهزة إلكترونية يمكنها كشف التهديدات والمخاطر الأمنية قبل حصولها، وذلك تماشياً مع الوعي العالمي بضرورة اتخاذ إجراءات الوقاية اللازمة.

- 440 مليون دولار مبيعات نظم الأمن والحماية بحلول العام 2014م، بحسب أحد الإبحاث المتخصصة.
- 10 % نمو الطلب على نظم المراقبة بالكاميرات في الشرق الأوسط خلال عام 2011م، ويتوقع إرتفاع الطلب عليها بشكل كبير خلال الأعوام القادمة.
- توقعات من جهات أمنية بنمو سوق نظم الفحص والمراقبة في الشرق الأوسط بنسبة 10 % خلال الأعوام القادمة.
- (58) مليون دولار حجم الإنفاق على أمن المطارات بالشرق الأوسط – بحسب دراسات "شركات متخصصة في الأمن والسلامة".
لماذا يقام 3S-EXPO بالمملكة؟
- المملكة تعد أكبر سوق بناء وتشييد في الشرق الأوسط.
- 300 مليار ريال كلفة مشاريع إنشائية يجري تنفيذها في السعودية خلال 2011م، وستكون جاهزة للعمل خلال الأعوام القادمة.
- تحتضن المملكة استثمارات أجنبية قادمة من أكثر من 50 دولة بقيمة 639 مليار ريال.
- جاري بالمملكة تنفيذ أكثر من (720) مشروعاً إنشائياً كلفتها أكثر من تريليون ريال سعودي، وتمثل 25% من الحركة الإنشائية والعمرانية في قطاع الأبنية السكنية والتجارية وقطاع التعليم والرعاية الصحية والترفيه.
- بلغ عدد عقود المشروعات التنموية خلال الميزانية الحالية (2460) عقداً تبلغ قيمتها الإجمالية أكثر من (182) مليار ريال.
- (150) مليار ريال خصصتها المملكة بميزانية العام المالي الحالي 2011م لمشروعات التعليم العام والتعليم العالي لأنشاء(4400) مدرسة جديدة،وتوفير وسائل السلامة لـ (2000) مبنى مدرسي.
- رصدت المملكة (9) مليارات ريال لإستكمال إنشاء المدن الجامعية في عددالجامعات.
- تنفذ المملكة (120) مستشفىً جديدةً بمناطقها المختلفة.
- (29) مليار ريال ميزانية رصدتها المملكة لإنشاء مشاريع جديدة وإضافات للمشاريع المعتمدة سابقاً للطرق والموانيء والخطوط الحديدية والمطارات والخدمات البريدية.
