Blockers to Reduce the Progression of
Experimentally Induced Myringosclerosis
and Tympanosclerosis
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the ability
of topically applied calcium channel blockers (diltiazem)
to reduce the progression of experimentally induced myringosclerosis
and tympanosclerosis.
Study Design: Animal model. Experimental prospective
study.
Methods: The study included 25 adult albino
guinea pigs that were bilaterally myringotomized and
inoculated with a suspension of Streptococcus pneumonia
type 3. The right ears were treated with topical application
of diltiazem, and the untreated left ears served as the
control group. One animal was sacrificed after 1
week and the remaining at the end of 6 weeks. Temporal
bones were dissected
Results: The untreated control ears showed evidence
of extensive myringosclerosis on otomicroscopy,
and the ears treated with calcium channel blockers did as
well although to a lesser degree. Under light microscopy,
middle ear mucosae of the control group exhibited thicker
(P < .1 and P < .05, respectively) sclerotic tissue in comparison with
the treatment group.
Conclusion: The results suggest that calcium channel
blockers had an influence in the prevention of tympanosclerosis.

Translation - Polish Miejscowe zastosowanie blokerów kanałów wapniowych w hamowaniu rozwoju sztucznie wywołanej myringosklerozy
i tympanosklerozy
Cel: Celem badania była ocena możliwości spowolnienia rozwoju sztucznie wywołanej myringosklerozy i tympanosklerozy przy pomocy terapii miejscowej blokerami kanałów wapniowych (diltiazem).
Model badawczy: Eksperymentalne badanie prospektywne na zwierzętach.
Metody: Badanie przeprowadzono na 25 dorosłych osobnikach albinotycznych świnek morskich, poddanych obustronnej myringotomii, a następnie zaszczepionych zawiesiną Streptococcus pneumonia, typ 3. Prawe ucho leczono miejscowo diltiazemem, zaś lewe, nie poddawane leczeniu, służyło jako grupa kontrolna. Po tygodniu uśmiercono jedno zwierzę, zaś pozostałe po 6 tygodniach trwania doświadczenia. Usunięto kości skroniowe.
Wyniki: W nieleczonych uszach kontrolnych otomikroskopia wykazała znaczną myringosklerozę, podobnie, choć w mniejszym stopniu, w uszach leczonych blokerami kanałów wapniowych. Source text - English With regards to the comparison of the figures from method I and II of cv. Yedikule, it is striking that almost all the data from method I were greater than the corresponding data on method II (Table 2). For example yield from the plots of the control treatment, 5, 10 and 15 g m2 of the method I were 425, 492, 476 and 503 g plant1, respectively, and each one of which was greater than the corresponding yield data from method II with 150, 257, 303 and 263 g plant1, respectively. The same is applicable to the other characteristics analyzed. It seems therefore that the method of composting and the fertilizers added to the straw bales made the difference due probably to the fact that straw bales composted according to method
1 were comparatively rich in nutrients. With regards to cv. Coolguard of method I, T. harzianum effect was not significant in all the characteristics studied (Table 3). A parallel experiment using method II was not available for cv. Coolguard therefore data from a second experiment using method II was not available. If such an experiment had been available, it could be expected that figures from method II would have been inferior to figures of method I, due to less nutrient availability in straw bales composted according to method II.
Results at harvest in soil in tunnel
All the quality characteristics and yield of lettuce grown in soil in the tunnel were not significantly affected by the application of T. harzianum that is the dosage main effect was not statistically significant. However, cultivar and dosage interaction was significant for head length (Table 4). In this experiment dosages applied were lower than the ones applied in the glasshouse experiment. The highest dosage main effect on the marketable yield was from 2 g m2 with 165 g plant1 in comparison to the control treatment with 141 g plant1. While 2 g m
2 was with the highest yield in the cultivars Tarsus and Nevada with 160 g and 187 g plant1, respectively, 4 g m2 produced the heaviest lettuce heads with 156 g plant1 from cv. Coolguard. The head diameter was the highest from 2 g m2 in the cultivars Coolguard and Nevada with 7.5 cm and 6.5 cm, respectively, whereas in the cv. Tarsus the control treatment produced the largest diameter with 6.7 cm.
Translation - Polish Porównanie rycin dla metody I i II cv. Yedikule wskazuje, że wartości niemal wszystkich danych uzyskanych za pomocą metody I są wyższe niż odpowiednie dane uzyskane w metodzie II (Tabela 2). Na przykład, plon z poletek kontrolnych oraz inokulowanych T. harzianum w ilości 5, 10 i 15 g na m2 wynosił odpowiednio 425, 492, 476 i 503 g na roślinę w metodzie I oraz 150, 257, 303 i 263 g na roślinę w metodzie II. To samo dotyczy pozostałych analizowanych cech. Wydaje się więc, że różnica wynika z metody kompostowania i nawozów dodanych do beli słomy, prawdopodobnie dlatego, że bele kompostowane metodą I były bogatsze w składniki odżywcze.
W odniesieniu do cv. Coolguard w metodzie I nie odnotowano istotnego wpływu T. harzianum na żadną z analizowanych zmiennych (Tabela 3). Dla cv. Coolguard nie przeprowadzono równoległego doświadczenia przy pomocy metody II, stąd nie ma danych na ten temat. Gdyby taki eksperyment został przeprowadzony, można by się spodziewać, że wartości dla metody II byłyby niższe niż dla metody I, z powodu mniejszej dostępności składników odżywczych w belach słomy kompostowanych metodą II.
Plonowanie roślin hodowanych w glebie w tunelu foliowym
Inokulacja T. harzianum nie miała istotnego wpływu na żadne cechy dotyczące jakości i plonowania sałaty rosnącej w glebie w tunelu foliowym, tj. główny efekt dawki nie był znaczący statystycznie. Z drugiej strony, zależność między odmianą i dawką okazała się znacząca w przypadku długości głowy (Tabela 4). Dawki zastosowane w tym doświadczeniu były niższe niż w doświadczeniach szklarniowych. Największy wpływ dawki na plonowanie obserwowano przy 2 g T. harzianum na m2, co wyrażało się masą 165 g na roślinę, w porównaniu do masy rośliny kontrolnej wynoszącej średnio 141 g. Zastosowanie 2 g na m2 umożliwiało uzyskanie najwyższego plonu w przypadku odmian Tarsus i Nevada, wynoszącego odpowiednio 160g i 187 g na roślinę, natomiast przy 4g na m2 uzyskano najcięższe głowy sałaty odmiany Coolguard o masie 156 g na roślinę. Średnica głów była największa przy 2 g na m2 w odmianach Coolguard i Nevada i wynosiła odpowiednio 7,5 cm i 6,5 cm, natomiast największa średnica głów roślin kontrolnych odmiany Tarsus wynosiła 6,7 cm.
