Source text - Italian In prospettiva di genere, l’influenza della famiglia di origine sulle scelte e sulle aspettative lavorative dei figli è stata al centro degli studi sullo sviluppo di carriera (career development) a partire dagli anni ’60. Tali studi hanno considerato, prevalentemente, lo status socioeconomico “paterno” mentre le variabili “materne” sono state utilizzate solo successivamente all’ingresso, sempre più frequente e stabile, delle donne nel mercato del lavoro. Russell e Sabel (1997) hanno sottolineato, tuttavia, l’importanza di considerare sia il sesso del genitore sia il sesso del figlio, tenendo distinte le quattro possibili diadi. Secondo questa prospettiva, la diade padre-figlio è quella che mostra la relazione più forte. Infatti, sulle aspirazioni professionali dei maschi pesano più nettamente le variabili paterne rispetto a quelle materne. Sulle aspirazioni delle figlie, invece, le variabili materne e paterne mostrano interazioni più complesse. Da un lato, l’impiego delle madri fuori casa rende più probabile nelle figlie l’impiego fuori casa, l’orientamento alla carriera e un atteggiamento verso i ruoli di genere più ampio e paritario (Mannheim e Seger 1993). Dall’altro però, anche il padre svolge un ruolo cruciale nel percorso occupazionale delle ragazze. Ad esempio l’occupazione paterna sembra condizionare maggiormente, rispetto all’occupazione materna, lo status occupazionale raggiunto dalle figlie (Huang e Sverze 2007). Inoltre, sebbene le giovani donne abbiano maggiore probabilità di intraprendere carriere non tradizionali quando le loro madri hanno carriere non tradizionali (Zuckerman 1981), tale probabilità aumenta se viene offerto supporto dalla famiglia e, in particolare, se questo arriva dai maschi della famiglia, primo fra tutti il padre (Houser e Garvey 1983).
Translation - English From a gender perspective, the influence of the family of origin on the career choices and expectations of children has been at the centre of career development studies since the 1960s. These studies have considered, mainly, the "paternal" socio-economic status, while the "maternal" variables were used only after the increasingly frequent and stable entry of women into the labour market. Russell and Sabel (1997) stressed, however, the importance of considering both the gender of the parent and the gender of the child, keeping the four possible dyads separated. According to this perspective, the father-son dyad is the one that shows the strongest relationship. In fact, the paternal variables weigh more heavily on the professional aspirations of the males than the maternal ones. The maternal and paternal variables, instead, show more complex interactions on the aspirations of daughters. On the one hand, the employment of mothers outside the home is closely linked to daughters working outside the home, being more career-oriented and having a broader and more equal attitude towards gender roles (Mannheim and Seger 1993). On the other hand, however, even the father plays a crucial role in the employment path of girls. For example, paternal occupation seems to influence the employment status reached by daughters (Huang and Sverze 2007) more than maternal employment. Furthermore, although young women are more likely to pursue non-traditional careers when their mothers have non-traditional careers (Zuckerman 1981), this probability increases if support is offered by the family and, in particular, if it comes from the males of the family, first among all the father (Houser and Garvey 1983).
