English to Dutch: Arabica Java Malabar Coffee General field: Marketing Detailed field: Food & Drink
Source text - English Description:
The first coffee plant in Indonesia was imported by the Dutch merchants who formed the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) in the year 1696. Mayor of Amsterdam, Nicholas Witsen ordered the commander of the Dutch troops in Malabar, India, Andrian van Ommen to bring coffee seedlings to Indonesia.
The Dutch conducted experiments on the plants in the Jakarta area wich became known of Pondok Kopi. After successfully growing well, Malabar coffee is then planted and cultivated in Priangan Area, west Java. As time goes by, Malabar coffee is also known as Java Preanger coffee. This is because Priangan is known is Prianger by the Dutch. Priangan land is chosen because it is a volcanic region formed from volcanoes, so it is very fertile. Java Island was the first place coffee cultivated widely outside Arabia and Ethiopia.
Coffee Malabar/Prianger is known as the wold “ A Cup of Java”. This coffee enjoyment of Java Prianger has been worldwide and stil demand today. Since that term A Cup of Java became very popular.
In 1711, the first coffee exports were made by the Dutch through their trading agen agency known as VOC. In 1725, Indonesia became the largest coffee exporting country in the world, and the most widely supplied from the island of Java. In 1750, the Dutch began to develop Arabica coffee plantations in Sumatra, Bali, Sulawesi, and the Timor island.
