"Is there somewhere we can sit and talk for a moment? I promise not to take too much of your time."
"Doll, you can take as much time as you like. I don't have anywhere important to be tonight." He led her down the hall to the dressing rooms. There was one big room with food and drinks and lots of places to sit, so he took her in there. His stomach growled when he showed her into the room decorated in Christmas garland and lights around the rafters. Bah humbug. His gaze fell on a platter of miniature sub sandwiches. "Do you mind if I eat? I'm starved."
She shook her head.
"Feel free to help yourself," he said, grabbing a sandwich. He squirted some mustard on it and then pulled a can of beer out of the cooler on the floor.
"I'm okay." Maybe she was the type that didn't like to eat in front of people. A lot of women were like that lately, not wanting to be judged for what they ate or how much they ate. He found it ridiculous. Why not enjoy food since everyone had to eat to survive anyway?
"Suit yourself, then." He bit into the sandwich and sighed in pleasure. Nothing like food after a performance. Well, there was one thing better after a show, and it looked like he was going without that tonight. He met Chastity's gaze. "Hey, sorry if I came on too strong in the hall back then. I've been told I'm an overbearing caveman sometimes." He flopped sideways on the couch and crossed his cloven hooves. Chastity stared openly at his feet, so he wiggled them a bit. Wasn't as effective as having toes. "You can touch them if you like."
"What?" Her gaze shot toward his face. "I mean…sorry, they just look so realistic. I don't know how you can stand on your tiptoes so long without having a heel or at least a wedge to help balance."
He snorted. "You should see my calves."
"Um, pass…but I'm sure they look amazing." She'd claimed a folding chair close to the exit and crossed her left leg over the right before she set her phone on her knee, speaker toward him. "Who makes them?"
"That's my secret." Interviewers asked that a lot. Truth was, there was no way to explain that a curse had made them, and they were as real as they looked. He could only create a glamour in the daytime to hide them, so he was stuck this way every night. He'd chosen to make the most of it in a way that he could hide in plain sight.
"Do you make them yourself?"
He placed his unopened beer on the floor next to him and wagged his finger at her. "I'll never reveal my source."
"Why a satyr then? Of all the mythological creatures."
He closed his eyes and finished chewing another bite of his sandwich, the bite more difficult to swallow even though he had come to terms with his past centuries ago. Chastity was going through the motions of a generic interview. Nothing new or exciting, and it wasn't her fault. He'd answered these questions one hundred times by now, telling lies and evading the best he could. What would she say if he told her the actual truth? He opened his eyes and met her gaze. "Because I was cursed three thousand years ago for witnessing an assault and death of a nymph. An unfortunate bystander in a feud between Pan and Dionysus." He paused, then added, "Because I, like the other men who were cursed, did nothing but stand there rather than trying to save her from a god."
Chastity sighed dramatically. "If you're not going to take this seriously—"
"You wanted my story," he interrupted with a shrug. In truth, the shame he felt for being present that night still stung. Virgins were "sacrificed" to the gods all the time in the old days. He hadn't even known that was going to take place when he was invited to a random orgy. All things considered, Syrinx wasn't raped in front of them—only because it turned out she hadn't been a virgin at all. She was, however, murdered by her intended husband. The same one who was giving Dionysus first dibs on her maidenhead—which Pan had accidentally taken earlier that day, not knowing who she was.
Ah, Ancient Greece. As Olympus Turns… Days of Our Immortal Lives…
"I didn't ask for fiction," Chastity said.
"If you say so." He turned away again. Cyprian had never told a woman the truth of the night he was cursed, the shame that brought him to that predicament. His bandmates knew, but kept his secret. Something Pan and the other Arcadian satyrs strongly advised against, but he'd already done it years before they knew he had. Too late now to erase their memories of that fact without leaving them damaged from the attempt.
Chastity hesitated before speaking again. "Are you saying that you want to approach your new-found fame in America by pretending to be the character you portray? Are the other bandmates going to do the same? Will you be making every public appearance in costume?"
"Don't be so judgmental, doll." He barely contained the bitterness from his tone. He didn't want to tell stories or lie. He wanted to be himself. Wanted to be appreciated despite his flaws like anyone else. Was that so wrong? "We all play a part whether we are aware of it or not."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
He looked her up and down, taking the last bite of his sandwich. He was still hungry, but he wasn't getting up again. Her immediate rejection of his story as merely fantasy only solidified the notion that a woman would never accept him if they knew the truth. Knew he was the very monster he appeared to be. "The outfit, the attitude…are you really as uptight as you appear, or is it an act? Did someone betray you, so now you're doing it to keep all men away?"
She gasped. "That is out of line."
It was, but he'd already crossed that line. "I call it as I see it." No way to take it back now.
"We're done here."
He chuckled with humor he no longer felt. "That article won't be very long."
"I'm sure I'll have plenty of things to say to give it a word count." She turned off her recorder and rose to her feet.
Cyprian's mood had darkened. It wasn't her fault, yet he was taking it out on her. He panicked, not ready to write her off completely. She might never accept him for who he really was, but her opinion of him…mattered. For some odd reason, it mattered, and maybe that was part of his irritation. "I'm sorry."
"Whatever."
"No, really." He caught her gaze. "I'm sorry. I know I'm a pain in the ass."
Her expression wasn't readable as she stuck her phone in her purse and snapped it closed. "Yeah, well. Don't be too hard on yourself. I had to take this assignment if I wanted to review the new play opening tomorrow night. Coincidentally, it too is based on Greek mythology, though it's been really hush, hush regarding the plot and characters."
He didn't know anything about a play opening up since he didn't follow theatre, but that seemed to fit her personality more than his show did. "Greek mythology is all the rage these days, didn't you hear? Giants and beasts fought at the base of Olympus." Before he could stop himself, he added, "I was supposed to be there."
She rolled her eyes. "I'm sure you were. I can't wait until they prove all that was a hoax. Deforestation has a lot of problems, but giants stomping over the trees is not one of them."
He laughed. Humans were great. They refused to even consider anything that they couldn't see with their own eyes, and when an actual satyr sat in front of her, it was still fiction. "What if it was a failed attempt to free the Titans from their cage?"
She shook her head, but she was no longer angry. You should write a book with that imagination of yours. "I have to go. Thank you for your time. I'll try not to be too harsh in my article, but I can't make any promises."
"Write your truth. We can take it." He pointed to his left. "Second door that way leads to the band dressing rooms. The others should be changed by now and willing to talk if you want more of an interview than you received from me." She seemed surprised by his telling her so and nodded as she left. "And Merry Christmas," he muttered under his breath, even though she was gone and unable to hear it. He didn't celebrate the holiday and never had. It was more habitual to say it when surrounded by so many who did. Still, he resented this time of the year. All the happy families and new engagements. Okay, so he was jealous that he'd never have that. He was man enough to admit it.
Looked like another lonely night for him.

–¿Hay algún sitio en el que podamos sentarnos y hablar un momento? Te prometo no robarte demasiado tiempo.
–Muñeca, puedes privarme de tanto tiempo como necesites. No hay ningún sitio importante al que tenga que acudir esta noche –la condujo por el vestíbulo hasta los camerinos. Había una gran habitación con comida y bebida y mucho sitio para sentarse, así que la llevó ahí. Su estómago rugió mientras le mostraba el camino hasta una habitación decorada con guirlandas navideñas y luces en las vigas. Bobadas. Su mirada se detuvo en una bandeja de mini sándwiches–. ¿Te importa si como algo? Me muero de hambre.
Ella negó con la cabeza.
–Sírvete tú misma, sin miedo –dijo, cogiendo un emparedado, echándole un chorro de mostaza y sacando luego una lata de cerveza de una nevera portátil ubicada en el suelo.
–Estoy bien. –Quizá fuera del tipo de las que no les gustaba comer delante de la gente. Muchas mujeres eran así últimamente, no querían que se las juzgara por lo que comían o cuánto comían. Le parecía absurdo. ¿Por qué no disfrutar de la comida dado que, de cualquier forma, todos teníamos que comer para sobrevivir?
–Como gustes –mordió el emparedado y suspiró de placer. Nada como pegar un bocado después de una actuación. Bueno, sí que había algo mejor tras un concierto, y parecía que se iba a quedar sin eso esta noche. Se cruzaron las miradas.
–Oye, siento si me he pasado de la raya contigo un poco antes, cuanto estábamos ahí fuera. Ya me han dicho que puedo ser un cavernícola prepotente a veces –se sentó de lado en el sofá y cruzó las pezuñas hendidas. Chastity le miraba sin disimular los pies, de modo que los retorció un poco. No era tan efectivo como tener dedos–. Puedes tocarlas si te apetece.
–¿Qué? –su mirada voló hasta su cara–. Quiero decir... lo siento, es que tienen un aspecto tan real. No sé cómo consigues estar de puntillas tanto tiempo sin llevar tacones o al menos una cuña para que ayude a equilibrarte.
–Deberías verme las pantorrillas –resopló él.
–Esto... creo que paso. Pero seguro que tienen un aspecto increíble –se hizo con una silla plegable cerca de la salida y cruzó la pierna izquierda sobre la derecha, antes de poner el móvil en marcha sobre su rodilla, con el altavoz hacia él–. ¿Quién es el fabricante?
–Ese es mi secreto. –Los periodistas le preguntaban eso a menudo. La verdad era que no había forma de explicar que una maldición las había hecho así y eran tan reales como parecían. Sólo podía crear un hechizo de glamour durante el día para esconderlas, así que estaba atado a ellas por las noches. Había elegido sacar todo el provecho de la situación de tal forma que pudiera ocultarlas al máximo de la vista.
–¿Las haces tú mismo?
Dejó la lata sin abrir sobre el suelo a su lado y meneó un dedo ante ella:
–Nunca revelaré mi fuente.
–¿Por qué un sátiro entonces? De todas las criaturas mitológicas.
Cerró los ojos y acabó de masticar otro bocado de su emparedado, el bocado más difícil de tragar, a pesar de que había hecho las paces con ello hacía siglos. Chastity le entrevistaba de una forma rutinaria. Nada nuevo o emocionante, y no por su culpa. Hasta entonces, había contestado a esas preguntas cientos de veces, contando mentiras y eludiéndolas lo mejor que podía. ¿Qué diría ella si le contase la pura verdad? Abrió los ojos y se cruzaron las miradas.
–Porque me maldijeron hace tres mil años por ser el testigo del ataque y muerte de una ninfa. Un desgraciado testigo en la pelea entre Pan y Dionisio –hizo una pausa y luego añadió–: Porque yo, como otros hombres que fuimos maldecidos, no hicimos nada, excepto quedarnos de brazos cruzados, en vez de intentar salvarla de un dios.
Chastity supiró de forma dramática:
–Si no te vas a tomar esto en serio...
–Querías saber mi historia –la interrumpió, encogiéndose de hombros. La verdad era que aún le hacía daño la vergüenza de haber estado presente aquella noche. Antiguamente, se “sacrificaban” vírgenes a los dioses todo el tiempo. Ni siquiera había sabido que aquello iba a ocurrir cuando le invitaron a no sé qué orgía. Con todo, Siringa no fue violada delante de ellos... tan sólo porque resultó ser que no había sido virgen en absoluto. Sin embargo, fue asesinada por su prometido. El mismo que la había desvirgado... lo mismo que había hecho Pan, por accidente, un poco antes ese mismo día, sin saber quién era ella.
Ah, la Antigua Grecia. Así era el Olimpo... Días de Nuestras Vidas Inmortales...
–Yo no pedía ficción –dijo Chastity.
–Si tú lo dices –de nuevo le dio la espalda. Cyprian nunca le había contado a una mujer la verdad sobre la noche en que le maldijeron, la vergüenza que le embargó tras aquel apuro. Sus colegas del grupo sí que lo sabían, pero mantenían el secreto. Algo que, encarecidamente, le habían desaconsejado hacer Pan y otros sátiros de la Arcadia, pero ya lo había hecho años antes de que supieran que lo había hecho. Demasiado tarde ahora para borrar sus recuerdos de ese hecho, sin provocarles daño en el intento.
Chastity vaciló antes de volver a preguntar:
–¿Me estás diciendo que quieres acercarte a tu fama recién adquirida en Estados Unidos fingiendo ser el personaje que retratas? ¿Y tus otros colegas van a hacer lo mismo? ¿Vais a llevar un disfraz en cada aparición pública?
–No seas tan sentenciosa, muñeca –tuvo problemas para reprimir la amargura de su voz. No quería ir con cuentos o mentir. Quería ser él mismo. Quería que le apreciaran a pesar de sus defectos, como a cualquier otro. ¿Qué tenía de malo?–. Todos desempeñamos un papel tanto si somos conscientes como si no.
–¿Qué quieres decir con eso?
La miró de arriba a abajo, tomando el último bocado de su emparedado. Seguía con hambre, pero no quería volver a levantarse. Su inmediato rechazo de su historia como una mera fantasía sólo consolidaba la noción de que una mujer nunca le aceptaría si conociera la verdad. Si supiera que él era el verdadero monstruo que aparentaba ser.
–El atuendo, la actitud... ¿eres realmente tan estirada como pareces o es una actuación? ¿Te traicionó alguien y te vistes así ahora para mantener alejados a los hombres?
–Vaya una impertinencia –bufó ella.
Lo era, pero ya había cruzado esa línea.
–Es lo que pienso –ahora ya no podía retirarlo.
–Hemos terminado aquí.
Él se rió entre dientes, con un humor que ya no sentía:
–Ese artículo no será largo.
–Estoy segura de que tendré muchas cosas que decir –apagó la grabadora y se levantó.
El humor de Cyprian se había echado a perder. No era culpa de la chica, pero lo estaba pagando con ella. Sintió pánico, no estaba listo para darla completamente por perdida. Puede que nunca aceptara quién era él de verdad, pero... sí que le importaba, lo que pensara de él. Por alguna razón extraña, importaba, y quizá eso era parte de su irritación.
–Lo siento.
–Como quieras.
–No, en serio –captó su mirada–. Lo siento. Sé que soy un grano en el culo.
Su expresión era indescifrable, mientras guardaba el móvil y lo cerraba con un golpe seco.
–Sí, bueno. No te fustigues tanto. Tenía que hacerme cargo de este trabajo para poder hacer luego la crítica de una nueva obra teatral que se estrena mañana por la noche. Casualidades de la vida, también se basa en la mitología griega, si bien ha pasado muy desapercibida, a tenor del argumento y los personajes.
No sabía nada sobre estrenos teatrales ya que no los seguía, pero aquello parecía encajar con su personalidad más de lo que lo hacía en su concierto.
–La mitología griega está de moda estos días, ¿no crees? Gigantes y bestias luchando en las faldas del Olimpo –antes de poder detenerse, añadió–: Se suponía que tenía que estar ahí.
Ella puso los ojos en blanco.
–Sí, claro. Me muero porque me demuestren que todo eso era un fraude, vamos. La deforestación tiene muchos problemas, pero gigantes que pisotean árboles no es uno de ellos.
Él se echó a reír. Los humanos eran fantásticos. Rechazaban siquiera considerar cualquier cosa que no pudiesen ver con sus propios ojos, y cuando un sátiro de verdad se sentaba delante de ella, seguía siendo una ficción.
–¿Qué te parecería si te dijera que aquello fue un intento fallido para liberar a los Titanes de su jaula?
Ella meneó la cabeza, pero ya no estaba furiosa.
–Deberías escribir un libro con esa imaginación tuya. Tengo que irme. Gracias por tu tiempo. Intentaré no ser demasiado dura en mi artículo, pero no te prometo nada.
–Escribe tu verdad. Podemos aceptarla –señaló a su izquierda–. La segunda puerta por ese camino lleva a los camerinos del grupo. Los demás ya se deberían haber cambiado y tendrán ganas de hablar, si quieres algo más que la entrevista que te he dado –pareció sorprendida al escucharle decir eso y asintió mientras se iba–. Y Feliz Navidad –murmuró, cuando ya se había ido y no le podía oír. Nunca celebraba las fiestas y nunca lo había hecho. Todas esas familias felices y nuevos compromisos. Vale, puede que estuviera celoso de no haber tenido nunca eso. Era lo bastante hombre para reconocerlo.
Parecía que iba a ser otra noche solitaria para él.

The air around them glimmered with green and purple sparks. Quinn shot to his feet. He stood guard in front of Averell and her father.
“Show yourself,” he demanded of the undulating cloud.
“What is happening?” she whispered. Cold fear slid down her back.
“Bad magic,” Quinn whispered.
Then a woman materialized from the glittering cloud. Tall and slim, a black cloak obscured her figure and hid her hair and eyes, but her lips were blood red. “How unfortunate I must bear witness to such a heart wrenching scene,” she said without an explanation, and the darkness of her voice slid over Averell’s skin like squid ink. She came forward a few steps and pointed a red-painted fingernail at Quinn. “Be gone with you, peasant.” With a flick of her wrist, he was tossed aside, landing in the shrubbery nearby.
Her father gasped. “Queen Grimhilde, at least allow me the dignity to die without you mucking that up, too.”
Averell stared. Her jaw hung open. This woman—this killer—was her mother. “Leave him be.”
“Tsk, tsk, child,” said the queen. She glided forward. Did her feet even touch the ground? “I asked for a life. He failed to deliver, so I took his. Now you need to pay for his betrayal.”
“How?” Slowly, Averell stood even as her father scrabbled for her hand and urged her to stay quiet. Somehow, this woman would pay for what she’d done.
“Such spirit.” The queen came ever closer. She peered into Averell’s face. “There was a time, dear girl, when I had considered keeping you, molding you into my image.”
“Using me as your own personal pawn in a game I want no part of,” she spat out as Quinn struggled to his feet. What would he think of the proceedings? Her throat tightened. Would he still want her now that he knew the truth of her parentage?
A cold chuckle escaped the queen. “Perhaps, but then everyone has their uses.”
Averell planted her hands on her hips and glared.
The queen waved a hand at Averell’s father. “You are much like I was at your age. Pity we are on opposite sides now.” She backed away. “In any event, I must attend to Snow White myself.” She cast a look of loathing at Averell’s father. “However, I need you to kill Prince Charming of Annanvale for me. I simply cannot be in two places at once, and both are pressing engagements.”
“What?” Averell’s cry blended with Quinn’s.
The queen rolled her eyes. “It’s a small task at best. An in and out job, really. The prince is a wolf shifter. Such abomination mustn’t be allowed, and besides, I want his kingdom, for his lands border mine and are richer in resources. This existence has become so… stifling. I wish for more.” She floated backward. “Charming, or rather Prince Henry, is powerful with his wolf magic. I wonder if he truly knows that yet?” she said more as an aside. “If he does, he might decide to come after me, and I cannot allow that, for I have much to conquer.” Her laugh made Averell want to retch. “If he’s killed, he’ll never become king, and his father is frail, easily overthrown. Charming’s brother can be manipulated.”
From behind her, Quinn growled and the sound sent gooseflesh sailing over her skin.
“If I refuse your dictate?” Averell breathed a sigh of relief when he reached her side and slipped a protective arm around her waist.
“Why, I’ll kill you, of course. All magic has a price, girl. Did you think I would let your father spirit you away, the fruit of my loins, give you a small portion of my magic, without exacting payment at some point?”
“Dear God,” Quinn breathed as he stared at her, his eyes hooded. “You are her daughter? This isn’t a terrible joke?”
“Unfortunately, this is so,” Averell whispered back. There was no time to explain or even talk about the implications. She addressed the queen. “If you wish to kill me, do it, but be warned. I will fight.”
“Not against magic,” Quinn hissed. “You can’t.”
She brushed him away and stood firm. If there had indeed been a magic transfer at her birth—and there had to have been for she felt that obscure power buried deep within her—then she would bide her time in how she would use it.
“Ah, you would have made an excellent minion I think. Too bad there is more good in you than ill.” The queen pointed her blood red-tipped finger at Averell. “You have three nights to carry out this task.” Another round of laughter escaped her. “Two nights, really, for this one is almost expired. Kill Charming at his ball two nights hence or I shall snuff your life as I did your father’s.” She grinned, but there was no mirth in the gesture. “Remember, Mama loves you… or I would have had I not had other plans. Or been a different person.”
Another cloud of green and purple glitter formed and then suddenly the queen vanished. After the colors faded, the darkness was that much thicker.

El aire en torno a ellos resplandeció con chispas verdes y púrpuras. Quinn se puso de pie de un salto. Se colocó delante de Averell y de su padre para protegerlos.
–Muéstrate –exigió de la nube ondulante.
–¿Qué está pasando? –susurró. Un frío miedo le hormigueó por la espalda.
–Magia fea –susurró Quinn.
Entonces una mujer se materializó de la reluciente nube. Alta y delgada, una capa negra oscurecía su figura y ocultaba el cabello y los ojos, pero sus labios era de un color rojo sangre.
–Qué desafortunado tener que ser testigo de una escena tan desgarradora –dijo sin más explicación, y la oscuridad de su voz se deslizó sobre la piel de Averell como negra tinta de calamar. Se adelantó unos pasos y señaló a Quinn con una uña pintada de rojo–. Lárgate, campesino –con un movimiento de su muñeca, le lanzó a un lado, haciendo que aterrizase sobre unos matorrales cercanos.
Su padre jadeó:
–Reina Grimhilde, al menos permíteme la dignidad de morir sin estropear eso también.
Averell la miró fijamente, con la mandíbula abierta. Esta mujer –esta asesina– era su madre.
–Déjale en paz.
La reina chasqueó la lengua y se deslizó hacia adelante. ¿Habían tocado sus pies el suelo siquiera?
–Pedí una vida. Fracasó en la entrega, así que tomé la suya. Ahora vas a pagar por su traición.
–¿Cómo? –Averell se puso de pie con lentitud, aún cuando su padre escarbaba la tierra para encontrar su mano e instarla a que se callara. De alguna forma, esta mujer pagaría por lo que había hecho.
–Vaya carácter –la reina se acercó aún más. Miró con atención el rostro de Averell–. Hubo un tiempo, querida niña, en el que consideré mantenerte conmigo, moldearte a mi imagen.
–Utilizarme como tu propio peón personal en un juego del que no quiero tomar parte –escupió ella, mientras Quinn tenía dificultades para levantarse. ¿Qué pensaría él de todo aquello? Su garganta se cerró. ¿Seguiría queriéndola ahora que conocía la verdad de su familia?
Una fría risita se le escapó a la reina:
–Quizá, pero en cualquier caso todos tenemos nuestros propósitos.
Averell se puso en jarras y la fulminó con la mirada.
La reina hizo un gesto con la mano hacia el padre de Averell:
–Te pareces mucho a mi cuando tenía tu edad. Lástima que estemos ahora en polos opuestos –se echó hacia atrás–. En cualquier caso, deberé ocuparme de Blancanieves yo misma –lanzó una mirada de odio hacia el padre de Averell–. No obstante, necesito que mates al Príncipe Encantador de Annanvale por mi. Yo no puedo sencillamente estar en dos lugares a la vez, y ambas cosas son asuntos urgentes.
–¿Qué? –el gritó de Averell se mezcló con el de Quinn.
La reina entornó los ojos:
–Una tarea de poca monta, en el mejor de los casos. Entrar y salir, realmente. El príncipe es un lobo cambiaformas. Semejante abominación no debe ser permitida y, además, quiero su reino, porque sus tierras limitan con las mías y son más ricas en recursos. Esta existencia se ha vuelto tan... asfixiante. Deseo más –flotó hacia atrás–. Encantador, o más bien el Príncipe Henry, es poderoso con su magia de lobo. ¿Me pregunto si realmente es consciente de ello ya? –dijo, más para sí misma–. Si lo es, podría decidir venir a por mi, y no puedo permitir eso, porque tengo mucho que conquistar –su risa hacía que Averell tuviera arcadas–. Si es asesinado, nunca se convertirá en rey, y su padre es frágil, será fácil deponerle. Al hermano de Encantador se le puede manipular.
Desde detrás de ella, Quinn gruñó y el sonido le puso la carne de gallina.

His gaze traveled back to her bruised cheek and he reached for her hand, wrapping it in his. “What happened to you?”
She averted her gaze just before a rapping sounded at the door. Evan released a breath as two maids bustled in with their lunch trays. Devilishly bad timing to be sure. He scooted back in the chair and waited for the maids to set up their trays. When they left, he turned back to Marina. She was already chewing on a biscuit.
Rather than press her for answers, he lifted a finger sandwich from his plate. He turned his attention back to her, his eyes going directly to her lush pink lips. Something stirred within him—desire? No, it could not be. Suddenly parched, he reached for his wine glass and took a deep drink.
“I fear it’s a long tale.”
He met her gaze, taken aback. He’d not expected her to broach the topic without his prodding, but it was the pain and fear in her eyes that truly unsettled him. Evan forced a shaky grin meant to reassure her. “I have lots of time. That is, if you want to tell me about it.”
Her tongue darted out, lapping wine from her lips. Good God, she was stunning. His groin tightened and he readjusted his position on the chair. He had no business lusting after her—not when she was recovering and clearly unsettled—not ever.
“You are sure to think poorly of me once you know what I’ve done.” Her gaze drifted downward, her eyelashes concealing the striking green of her eyes.
At that moment he doubted anything she could have done would cause him to think badly about her. He patted her hand to offer reassurance. “I promise you that nothing you can say will change my opinion of you.”
She moved her hand from beneath his and placed it over her rounded belly. “I got quite swept off my feet by a gentleman. He professed his love and promised to marry me.” She paused for long moments before meeting his gaze. Her cheeks blossomed pink, a deep blush staining them. “My actions are my own. I’m afraid I proved to be quite the fool in this instance for I allowed passion to rule me.”
Evan’s blood simmered as he guessed where the tale was going. “The scoundrel left you with child and no offer of marriage?”
Marina nodded, confirming his suspicions.
Evan wanted to pummel the man. Challenge him to a duel. Make the rogue pay for what he’d done. He wished he could have done as much for Rosa, his sweet, innocent little sister. She’d fallen victim to a smooth talking rogue who’d promised her the world only to leave her alone and disgraced. “I’ll make him pay for what he’s done. Give me his name.”
Marina’s eyes rounded. “The fault is mine. It would do no good for you, or anyone else to confront him.”
Evan fisted his hands. The devil it would not, but if Marina did not wish for him to meddle then he’d honor her request, leastwise for now. He tugged his cravat to lose it a bit and said, “You cannot blame yourself. Many a good woman has found herself ruined by no fault of her own.”
“I could have denied him,” She said.
The air left his lungs, Rosa’s final words slamming into him. “No.” Evan’s tone came out with a hard edge. “The blame is his alone. He knew you were an innocent and he took advantage. The very thing happened to my sister.”
Marina sat forward, her gaze studying him. “You have a sister? I should like to meet her.”
“I wish that were possible.” His throat tightened as sorrow swept over him like a great ocean wave. “The scandal proved too much for her. After being shunned from society and retreating to the country, she hung herself.”
Evan should have left it at that, but he could not stop himself from continuing on. “Rosa, that was her name. She was witty and intelligent. Many called her a Diamond of the first water. She’d held London in the palm of her hand, ruling the ballrooms and parlors. Every door had been open to her. She had such promise for the future. A zest for life. She saw the beauty in everything. There was always a smile on Rosa's lips. Even in the worst of circumstances, she found a reason to be optimistic…until she did not.” Evan drew in a deep breath. “She’s been gone three years.”
Marina squeezed his hand and he wondered when she’d captured it. “Oh Evan, how horrible.”
Why the devil had he confessed so much to this woman he hardly knew? And what a cad to have interrupted her, turning the conversation to himself.
